Seagate Personal Cloud 4TB... anyone have any thoughts/opinions?

I saw the price on this unit has dropped pretty considerably - 149.99 shipped no tax - so just picked one up and figured I'll fiddle around with it. My wife has been bugging me on some tech projects here around the house, and as much fun as shelling out 600-800 bucks on a quality QNAP/Synology NAS box + corresponding drives would be, leaning toward something that is a little easier for her to use for now so that I don't spend any more of my waking hours as functional tech support for her.
Does anyone have any experience with the device? I worry about a single bay drive and haven't seen any real options to "backup the backup", but seems that it will work fine as a plex media server as long as all of the files are "ready to play" (mp4, mkv, h264/5, etc). If I get a solid 2 years out of it, I feel like it will have been worth the cash... at which point, I may upgrade to a more long term solution with multi-bay RAID configuration. This seem reasonable, or am I off my gourd?

I hear this a lot, but it's always anecdotal... not disagreeing with you, just have met many who feel similarly about WD (I've also personally had WD drives fail and not Seagate, but again... anecdotal).
If I were just going to buy drives, I'd buy WD because the EasyStore can be shucked for Reds, but on the single drive NAS ready system, the WD product is marginally more expensive but also has awful reviews from a usability standpoint. Not to mention they left a hardcoded backdoor exploit on most of their NAS products sitting around for 6 months with no attempt to correct it until it was announced.
Any recommendations on a better alternative that would stay under $200 or so for 4TB? I am not in a rush... can always return this one and wait for the WD 8TB drives to go on sale again, just not sure I wanna shell out 300 bucks on an enclosure too.

Newegg has this in today's email.
Mad March Savings: $139.99 Seagate 8TB Ext. Hard Drive if you are interested

Unfortunately, the quality of the drive in that one is generally not very good as far as I'm aware. The Personal Cloud uses one of the Iron Wolf/NAS type drives. WD seems to be the only one that puts higher end drives (Red) in the Easy Store, and as best as I can tell from researching, it's only on the 8TB model. Should have bought one or two a few weeks ago but wasn't planning on tackling this until later in the year just due to bandwidth... wife is getting impatient.

I would go with Toshiba, got 2 hard drives a TB & 3tb. They have stood up for 2-3 years. Everybody i know who had a Seagate hard drive has failed.
The only problems i have had with them is the cable/cords but they aren't expensive.

The Seagate fail rate is much higher than WD or Samsung

Hard drive failure rates
I've had 3 of the 4TB seagates, and they've been running 24/7 for the past 2ish years without a problem

I have personally handled several hard drives over the years and the Seagates absolutely fail at crazier rate than WD. I prefer WD myself, but that's just my experience.

I had a 1TB Seagate drive that lasted about 8 years.
when it crashed, i got one of those small USB Seagate drive, 2TB, and it's lasted 3 years still kicking.
Bought a 4TB Seagate and it's been doing just fine for 2 years. and then i just bought a 8TB Seagate.
All i have on it is movies and pictures and using it for plex. The 8TB has everything on it, the 4TB one has the movies backed up, the 2TB has the pictures backed up. in a year i'll buy another 8TB to have 3 backups.
It's cheaper to keep buying hardrives than pay for a cloud with that much storage.
What are people doing where they aren't getting 2 years out of their hard drives?

For anyone looking... the now seemingly standard 8TB easystore deal is live again at Best Buy via Ebay: LINK
Anyone know if the 4TB drives are shuckable Reds as well? Or only the 8's with any regularity? Debating grabbing an 8, and just setting it up to backup the Seagate for now, and then if I decide I don't like the Seagate, may shuck it as part of a full NAS setup...
