Samsung Throwing white flag... Going to buy OLED panels from LG

A big shakeup might be coming to the AV world as Samsung may start producing OLED TVs with panels sourced by rival LG, according to a report from Korean broadcaster MTN spotted by Sammobile. The two companies have reportedly inked a conditional deal for Samsung to buy up to 1 million OLED panels from LG in the second half of 2021 and up to 4 million panels in 2022.

This is somewhat disappointing since Samsung had been moving forward with their own OLED technology. Basically we only have one panel manufacturer in the world now?

Will not buy Samsung again anyway. After my 50" LG LEDs died about 3 years ago, I got a 55" Samsung that has 5 or 6 blue pockets throughout the screen that started popping up about 2 or 3 months ago. Contacted Samsung and they said they hadn't heard of that (lies. plenty of evidence online with Samsung reps responding to the issues) and I could take it to an approved shop in town that would look into fixing it for me. The repair estimate was $450 so I'd be better off just getting a new TV. Highly disappointing.

At this point we are still years away from consumer affordable microLED TVs. Hell they still haven't produced one under 100" yet. This year they make a 90" one.
Guessing this will bridge the gap for the next handful of years for Samsung

It got significantly delayed due to COVID. They spent the last year basically not being able to get parts/chips for MicroLED production.
The 110" version is 155K and the 99" 130K that are coming this year.
Apple has some for next year too.

Samsung display is still developing their own stuff. Samsung electronics, the TV maker, is going with LG OLED.
This year's LCD TVs from Samsung are from a chinese panel fab anyway.

Samsung currently makes "QLED," which is a marketing term (basically an LED Tv, tweaked). It was never anything like OLED.
EDIT: I did not hear if they were starting to move forward with an actual OLED screen. Not sure if this is what you meant or not.

If you have Verizon or Sprint cell service you can file a claim on the TV and have it replaced or they will cut you a check for the replacement cost.
Sign up their protect home service. It's 25.00 monthly for 5k worth of coverage. File the claim get the replacement then cancel.

Samsung had started their own true oled display technology and had even demonstrated it.
I guess they figured they would never compete with LG and are going to abandon that development.

Samsung wasn't developing an OLED tv like LG. They were using the OLED as a backlight instead of LEDs. The QD in QD-OLED is for the quantom dot color filter. This color filter replaces the LCD polarization filter of their current TVs.
LGs OLED is like an old plasma. They use different organic compounds to create different color light. Each pixel is self emissive.

I mean that is the whole point of an OLED TV. You don't use a backlight it is self emissive. Samsung QD-OLED was using what they learned with traditional lcd display technology and trying to come up with an evolution to OLED.
quote:
To deal with the technical hurdles of OLED brightness, QD-OLED TVs take a page out of QLED TV’s handbook. Using the same principle that lets a QLED TV turn a blue backlight into a pure white light using red and green quantum dots, a QD-OLED panel uses just blue OLED material as the basis of each pixel.
That blue OLED pixel is then divided into three subpixels: A blue subpixel, which is the original blue OLED material, left unchanged; a red subpixel that uses red-tuned quantum dots; and a green subpixel that uses green-tuned quantum dots.
Digital trends explantation of QD-OLED
Sounds like they couldn't overcome the hurdles of blue OLED materials or just couldn't see a way to make it competitive price wise with LG.

Is this the way to go now? I have a 65" LG C7 OLED and frankly, I'm not as happy with it as I'd like. Especially something I paid $2,500 for back in 2017. Dark scenes have too much banding and it's really surprising how bad the quality can be. I had LG replace the screen and the guy doing it said it wouldn't be better with the new screen. He was right. I did get a 2020 screen out of it though. Outside of specific dark scenes where you get this halo/banding effect, it is a beautiful screen though.
Just wondering if I should consider microLED when it's consumer ready.

MicroLED is the future yes, both mobile displays and televisions. It's the grand daddy of them all when it's ready, none of the shortcomings of the already outdated OLED tech.
The COVID shutdown on it's development really sucks, we would have had some MicroLED smart watches and tablets end of this year instead of 2022 now.
Apple has their own MicroLED development and facility, but still seems to be 2022 before we see the first MicroLED iPad or Watch. Not sure if they've also been delayed by covid though.

I have this exact tv, and I’m just now really starting to pick up on the banding during dark scenes. How did you go about getting the panel replaced?

Thanks, I’ll be waiting for it.

I reached out to them through Facebook. I had actually posted a negative comment on one of their ads and they emailed me. It won’t fix the banding though.
