Please explain to me like I’m a little girl. If I get a new “smart” TV, do I still need to get the Roku and Firestick? Have an older firestick but read in the big thread that the newer ones are better so I’m ok with that. If I want to watch Roku do I buy a Roku stick for that too or is it just an app that I download?

Depends on what TV you get. Many TVs don't have some common streaming apps like ESPN, Fox Sports, etc. So you'll likely need a roku or firestick to guarantee you'll have access to all the streaming apps you use.

If you get a Roku TV or a Fire TV then obviously having an additional separate Roku or Fire devices isn't likely to give you anything more.

Ok so, just like a computer or a phone, a "smart" TV needs an operating system (OS) for apps to run on. For computers, this might be Windows, MacOS, or Linux. On phones, this might be Android or iOS. On TVs this might be Android TV, Roku OS, Apple tvOS, Amazon FireOS, etc.

"Smart" TVs have their own OS installed, but they are usually pretty shitty because they don't have the same level of app support as the others. Samsung/Sony/LG/etc TVs might have their own OS that needs apps specifically for it, but developers don't really spend a lot of time on these.

Some TVs come with Roku OS built in, which is fine because Roku has good app ("channel") support. However, we tend to upgrade our streaming sticks much more often than we upgrade our TVs because the technology advances so much faster, so in a few years the chips in your TV might not be so great for running the newest version of Roku OS. And you can't upgrade the hardware inside your TV, so you would end up buying the latest streaming stick anyway. At this point your TV's OS becomes mostly irrelevant because you'll be using the one on your new streaming stick.

TL;DR: You don't *need* a streaming stick for a "smart" TV, but I would recommend using one anyway.

I'm not sure what you mean by "watch Roku". Roku does have a channel with free content, and I think you can now install that channel on Firestick. But Roku is a device and OS that you can install other apps onto (Netflix, YoutubeTV, whatever) and watch those, but all those same apps are available for Firestick too.

FYI TCL and other TVs with Roku built into them are capable of doing dolbyvision but for some reason none of the sticks are able to do that currently so keep that in mind if you want a state of the art 4K HDR TV with Dolbyvision and you want to run apps through the roku interface.

Short answer:
Most smart TVs do not accept all streaming apps.
Most Roku/Firestick/Apple do not accept all streaming apps.

You usually have to double up so that you can get your HBO Max, Disney+, etc.

Just as a reference, my brand new Chinese TCL TV's apps are so much slower to open and navigate then my 2 year old Roku on my other TVs. I'll give it a few more months before I make the change and get another Roku.

Obviously your TCL or Hisense Roku TV's will not need a streaming device. They will have every app out there.

Your Sony's will not need one b/c they have built in androidtv's that support just about every app out there as well.

Samsung's Hub supports most of the major apps you'd want from what i remember. They used to not have ESPN, but do now.

LG doesn't support ESPN or Foxsports, and i think they only have hulu, but i could be wrong on that, meaning they don't support youtubetv, Slingtv, and whatever ATT has.

Vizio is usually the worst. I know they don't have sports, but looks like they have gotten youtubetv and hulu.

Everyone is going to have netflix and prime and disney+, it's really what sports app they support (ESPN, Fox, NBC, etc), and what streaming services they support (Hulu, Youtube, sling, ATT)

I"m a one remote kinda guy, so i'd much rather the nicer tv that has everything already on it. TCL RokuTV's are going to be the brest bang for your buck, Sony Androids are going to be the most expensive, but will have great quality and support just about every app imagineable, and Samsung will be the one inbetween that supports pretty much every app you'd likely want, have a great picture, and be priced inbetween the Sony and TCL. If LG would support the sports app, they'd be in there with Samsung for me.

Not every app. No HBO Max for now.

I just ordered my first Roku TV. My biggest fear is that Roku devices tend to become obsolete fairly quickly. New apps will program themselves to appear on only the newer Roku boxes. My guess is that in a couple of years, some Roku TVs will need an additional new box to get the newer apps.

they have the HBO app on mine. It's not the one you log in with your provider, it's to pay the monthly fee. Has all of their series and what not on it.
