Real wireless charging coming in 2018?

inductive charging requires charger and device to be in contact, or as good as. More ambitious ventures are seeking to make good on Nikolai Tesla's work* - electricity over a distance. Companies are developing far more advanced, and useful charging using magnetic resonance and RF charging – different technologies which allow charging at a much greater distance.
Energous has been quiet since its IPO in 2015. Until now.
...After a quiet period, it has burst back into view at CES. Its first midrange RF chip – WattUp Mid Field – received FCC certification on December 27, and it claims to have two major partners including "one of the top 10 consumer electronic companies in the world based on worldwide sales" with products incorporating WattUP in the second half of the year.

The article speculates Apple may be that partner and the article has a link to a demo video of them charging 2 different iPhones wirelessly at distances of up to 15 feet away from the charger.

Energous's Mid Field transmitter that recently received FCC approval only works to 3 feet, and it's very weak at that distance. While this system is merely impractical, the 15' system remains science fiction. Good comment on the severe limitations of the 3' system here:

Even if they don't give us cancer, I bet one of these charging stations will cost a fair bit more than a plug and cable you can get for $5ish. And if 15 feet is the limit you'd probably want one for each bedroom unless 2 rooms share a wall.

People imagine a mesh of these 15' transmitters, so that you're getting charged continuously wherever you are in a building. Hear that, nads? To be fair, it's beam-forming to detected devices, not just broadcasting in all directions.

I was wondering how they were dealing with the inverse square law.

Meh...we've all got it now...some are just symptomatic before something else kills them.
