WD vs. Seagate reliability. What's the verdict?
I can't comment on WD but I can tell you that I have a Seagate drive that crapped out on me and won't boot. It wasn't very old at all when the issue started. I can't access any of the data on it. I've heard better things about WD. I won't buy a Seagate again after this.

Seagate has always crapped out on me while WD has never. I think I’ve become a fan of WD because of this. I usually will spend the extra money for them over Seagate. I’ve bought around 20 hard drives over the years.

I used to have an equal fail rate between Seagate and WD, but in recent years, Seagate has fallen behind. I've purchased 5 Seagates in the last 5 years of varying capacities and form factors, and 3 of them failed in the first year. Other 2 are still going strong.

How the hell does that happen? Shouldn't these drives be getting MORE reliable?

so im thinking of raid5ing my 3 8TB drives then raid1 or 0 my 2 3 TB drives. depending how much data i want to use.

i do have another question though.... if i raid 5, 3 drives and out data on it. And i get more drives can i add drives to that array without losing the data?

So you have 3 drives right now, and want to know about the possibility of adding more down the road?
If I were you, I'd just get one more drive and go raid 10

i just think having 4- 8TB drive and only getting 16TB of space is a little bit of a waste.

I care more about redundancy than space.
But to answer your question, raid 5 is easy to expand

Dude, just come get this 2002 win server with the Xeon and 12 bays. You'll eventually get used to the sound.

It was funny how he would get when we mentioned Plex. Pretty sure he was ready to drive down here and fight me a couple times.

They made xeons back in 2002?

Posted on 4/9/18 at 1:19 pm to bluebarracuda
Not sure when the server was built but it was running winserver 2002. Too lazy to crack it open but Dell says it shipped with a Xeon.

I got all my drives recognized. That tortorial helped. I pulled the 3.3volt pin out of each sata connector and they booted up. Bad thing is I don't think I can raid them.
