What is an advantage to joining a private tracker?

ILikeLSUToo details the benefits of private trackers.

quote:

KAT and the like are public trackers. The content on private trackers is much more heavily moderated, so you are less likely to download a fake file, virus, or one of inconsistent/poor quality. It's also significantly safer to seed on a private tracker, whereas public trackers pretty much require a VPN if you let anything seed for more than a few minutes; high-profile content (movies, music, games) is monitored on public trackers by copyright enforcement groups on behalf of the major studios/publishers.

I used to use Pirates of the U.K., but no one was ever seeding anything I wanted.

You have to seed with a private tracker so you don't run into this issue.

You do if no one cares about the random, obscure ebook or 15 year old PC game you're downloading. You have to seed to maintain a specific ratio of uploads to downloads, but "what" you upload doesn't matter.

With IPtorrents you have to seed every torrent to a 1:1 ratio or seed it for 2 weeks. If you don't it gets logged as a hit and run. If you get too many hit and runs you'll get banned. You can zap hit and runs with your bonus points or excess upload. So you can grab something and not upload it if you want but most torrents that are on the site will usually have someone seeding it so it can be downloaded. The site may not have what you want but if it does you'll likely be able to download it.

What program do you all use to download?

I've used uTorrent in the past. Curious what's the best one to use.

I use utorrent because Transmission would never upload IPT torrents. On the home page they have a list of approved clients and ones that are banned. You can use one not on the approved list as long as it isn't banned but they won't help you if the tracker isn't reporting your stats correctly.

I always keep a solid ratio. Have over a 1 ratio on demonoid after nearly a decade on there. I just never used my ipt account

Okay...starting to use IP Torrents since I ATT wanted to jack up my cable. Had to cut out HBO.

How does this work? I don't really have anything worth uploading so do I just need to seed after I download something for a certain amount of time?

How long do I need to seed a 30 minute show after downloading?

To avoid a hit and run you need to seed a torrent to a 1:1 ratio, seed it for two weeks, or zap it with bonus points (you get points by making torrents available for download even if no one downloads it) or excess upload credit. What I do is do a search one or twice a week for new free leech torrents. They won't add to your download and you'll get credit for what you upload. That and new porn torrents are an easy way to get your ratio up.
