How can you get access to content? Do you stream off of various different users? I’d like to set it up but I don’t have a ton of content.

Some users on this board have mentioned friends and family servers, but I haven't seen anyone mention "public" servers so to speak. They might exist but you probably need to know the right people to ask and this might not be the place for that. It's strength really is more as a good interface to your own media library. Basically rip your own dvds or download torrents to stock it. You also avoid bandwidth charges watching a movie since it's on your internal network, so your kid watching Moana 10 times a day won't lead to overages.

I’ve got a bunch of DVDs that could be ripped. I wonder if there is a community out there that shares their plex content. I’ve got some digital downloads too that would function well with this. Any recommendations on hardware? NAS server or just a typical computer with some additional storage?

I've just got an older spare PC that I've hooked external drives to for extra storage. I've never experienced any problems, although most of my content are DVD quality, 1080p or 4k could need more horsepower than that. I honestly don't know.

I built a dedicated FreeNAS server that serves as my plex server, time machine backup, cloud storage, etc. I have a demonoid account where I download most things. Server has an AMD A4-5300 processor with 8BG RAM, around 4TB total storage.

Can you download from “friends” on plex or only stream?

Fairly certain if you connect to another plex account, you can only stream

You can create your own Plex Server from a PC at home and set the folders to wherever you have your movies or tv shows..

You can also have a friend add you as a friend and share their Server with you.. giving you access to all their content.

I can add you if you like and my server should be about all you need. Then you just select which server you want to browse from. I have over 7k movies and maybe 100+ shows.

There are threads on reddit about plex that people share for free their servers.. Just ask for a share or leave your username.

But yeah if you give me your username I can add you and you can check out my content.

How difficult was it to set up the Freenas software and raid configurations? I’ve been thinking about doing this.

Yeah, lots. I use to have it divided up into sections and kids movies was a section. However, I just put all movies into one library.

I don't use freenas, but there are several tutorial videos on youtube that you can maybe get an idea from.

and

Disclaimer. I didn't watch these. The second one by Byte, should be good though. I have watched his other tutorials before.

Initial software setup and raid configuration were not difficult. I had some trouble with permissions my first time around, but it's not too bad. I can help if you have questions along the way.

Thanks for the offer. I’m in the process of getting everything together. I’ll bookmark this for later and send you a request. Thank you.

Holy cow! I have a little over 400 and that takes up about 5TB, with 2/3 of the movies compressed with Handbreak. How do possibly store all of that?

i have a friend who said 'frick it' last month and switched to comcast 'unlimited'. he's redownloading everything in 4K where possible and he hit 2TB literally 5 days into the month of data used.

he's received 3 comcast 'nasty-grams' so far this month.

its a little disturbing how much your ISP knows about what you're doing.

what's next? throttling your bandwidth if you visit too many political websites comcast doesn't agree with?

well im constantly downloading 4k movies and movies in general. im into the 2-5TB range now. right now i have 15 days left and i have used 1950 GBs.

Which is why i brought up , it must be a lot of SD movies. cause 7k movies at really HQ, he would need to be running into the mid double digit TBs.

i would love to see his library though.

Yeah, if they were all HD movies squuzed down to 7Gb files, he'd be looking at 50TB of storage. h.265 hasn't been around long enough to squeeze them all down to the HD movies to 3GB size, but even that that would make up 20+ TB.

*Edit - not to mention downloading time, compression time and archiving time. Holy shite.

i routinely get 1080p BD rips around 1-2GB. to my untrained eye (or mediocre tv) they look great.
