Get a lifetime Plex Pass for only $74.99*!
We’re going old school with a throwback to the original lifetime Plex Pass pricing. Thank you for all of your support!
This exclusive discount on a lifetime Plex Pass is available now through 11:59 PM PT on Thursday, May 31, 2018. This code is for your account only and can be used once. As a reminder, a Plex Pass gives you access to all premium Plex features, like Live TV & DVR, Mobile Sync, Movie Trailers & Extras, Premium audio features, and many more.
why do i need this? and for the record, i am going to have to install a mast to get any type of local tv signal because my house is built into the side of a hill which blocks the signal so let's take local TV and DVR-ing OTA signals off the table for now.

The most compelling pay feature to me is the OTA DVR functionality, and for me personally it's not that compelling. I'd rather hold out for more locals to get added to the streamers than trying to get my wife to use a different app for watching locals.

it works with sonos without the plexpass too.

my wife is already pretty comfortable with plex (damn good thing since i cancelled netflix
) so i'd be curious how they implemented the 'watch live tv' or dvr-d tv shows UX.

I believe Korkstand switched from Tablo to Plex so he can probably tell you about it.

I got Plex Pass at that same discount a while back, and I'm glad I did. It unlocks all the features of the mobile app (including media sync for offline playback, and mobile photo upload if you don't trust Google with your photos) for starters. I think you can do this for $5 per device without PP, but it's nice that it's included in PP.
PP unlocks multi-user with parental controls.
I don't use Plex for music much, but PP unlocks a lot of features for that.
That's enough for me for it to easily be worth $75 for lifetime. And then you get whatever features they add in the future, too.
It's only $75 man, just get it.

I'm not seeing this as an option.
Maybe I need to cancel my monthly sub.
Where do you see this?

I got an email for being a long time customer last month I think. If you're paying monthly you need to make sure you're on their mailing list. The lifetime pass when they offer special deals is much better than paying monthly unless you think you won't be using it long term.

Have you ever compared to Emby (used to be Media Browser (MB)), and if so, why did you go Plex over Emby? I know that for whatever reason, Plex seems to get more "name drops," but they seem really darn comparable, and I'm just curious as to whether you in particular (someone who seems to know his shite among Tech Boarders) had a compelling reason to go with one vs other.
I am also drunk in Jamaica currently, so i apologise for spelling errors or if that made no sense.

I tried downloading plex. I could never get it to work. Covenant, exodus and elysium are all shut right now on kodi. I don't know what to do.

Not sure why you can’t get it to work.
Are you trying to run your own server?
Try watching YouTube tutorials if needed

Does Emby readily have apps on smart TVs and media streaming devices like plex does?
I’ve heard the arguments for both by can’t remember them. I prefer plex because I’m comfortable with it and it’s what I share with all my friends and they share their servers back.

I purchased it about six years ago. Worth every penny. Don't be cheap. Just do it.

quote:I thought about trying Emby at one time, and if it was just me I would have at least given it a try. But I tried Plex first, and my wife and 5 year old were able to use it, and it does everything we need very well, and it looks good doing it. So, other than curiosity, I never had a reason to try anything else.

Yes and no. It admittedly is less widespread , but it does cover Roku, which is a huge player in the in--network streaming game.

That's basically what I am asking for here. Emmy "unlocks" live streaming of unencrypted channels at the "basic" (free) tier, which Plex does not. I'm not trying to argue which is better at the paid level by any means. I'm curious as to if anyone has really got bullet points on one v the other at dithering free or paid tier.
So far, Plex seems to win the WAR (wife approval rating, not to be confused with baseball WAR, which is way overrated. When it comes to home theater + HTPC use, WAR is significantly more important than functionality and features combined, in my very humble opinion.
Please excuse any lack of logic or grammar in the above. I'm currently honeymooning and drunk.

I read up on this topic last week. These are individualized offers and thought to be random. So the offer is tied to CAD’s account. He couldn’t even give it away if he wanted to.

Thanks. I cancelled and if they offer me the same deal I will probably jump on it.
