I just did this for my son. Fortunately, the school published minimum and then recommended specs, so it was fairly easy. I found Lenovo's site very user friendly re: searching for the various parameters and found something perfect for him.

I got both my daughter and son this one. I watched a handful of reviews on YouTube and this was the one mostly recommended.

I’ve had several people recommend Apple MacBooks. What are y’all’s thoughts on that?

what does the school recommend for the major you will pursue? There are some majors where a MB would be a great choice and some where it would not.

Was a specific no-go for my son's school.

I don't know how animal scientists use their computers, so I cant make a recommendation based on that info. The important take away here is that the college should have a recommendation for the type of computer and specs your granddaughter would need. I would follow those as a baseline if this is supposed to be her college computer versus picking something based of recs from strangers on a message board.

MacBooks are good. I have owned many. It just depends on how much you want to spend because the MacBooks will be more expensive and have less ram and memory storage compared to the Asus. I say this being a big apple guy. Almost everything I own is apple. Apple does have the best battery life. It just got down to knowing my kids will be rough with these laptops and I didn’t want to spend that much money. Plus, I watched some youtube computer Tech guys that recommended the Asus one I shared in the link.
