Just moving into my new house and looking for something simple. I do not want traditional speakers my bonus room is my 3yo's play room and my "home theater" so I don't want a bunch of big speakers for her to knock over.

So I was thinking soundbar but the soundbars that I saw seem to be in the $500-800 range that would match up with the 75" tv.

I have a receiver and I have a subwoofer from the last house so I was looking at passive sound bars.

Does anyone have any experience with Definitive Technology?

I was looking at a SSA-50 or SSA-42. Price wise I may as well get the SSA-50.

I also have some bose cubes that I was going to use for the surround / rears.

I have two active Definitive soundbars and a 3-piece L-C-R of the Mythos 10 speakers. I'm sure their passive soundbars would sound very good. My son has a pair of their bookshelf speakers and I also have a Supercube 2000 sub from them. Everything I have experienced is quality.

I have a mythos 9 center channel with my in ceiling speakers and it sounds great. My inlaws also have the bookshelf speakers and they sound great.

My sub with it is a def tech 1000 if I remember the model number right.

I have the ssa 50 and I love it. I had a real surround sound system in my previous house but didn’t want wires and wanted a cleaner setup this time. It jams and gets far louder than I need it to. I’ve shown many people how loud it gets and give up before I hear any distortion. In the beginning of the Martian I really felt like debris was flying all around me. Is it as good as real surround sound? Of course not. But the clarity, depth and loudness are amazing. You have to turn down the center channel a couple notches on your receiver and turn up the real channels to increase the surround sound effect. I have my sub in the corner of the room away from the ssa 50. Between it shaking the walls and creating additional sound behind us and the ssa 50 I really don’t feel like I need anything else.

Thanks that’s what I was looking for. Just a little reassurance before buying since I can’t listen to them.

I have some def tech products and really like their clear warm sound.

I really can’t say enough good about it. It makes everything sound good from music to classic movies to new blu rays. It’s def caught me off guard too the way the sound will bounce off the wall as if it’s coming from the rear of the room. I’ve looked back a couple times because of sirens in movies.

I feel ya here. Jamo used to make an awesome passive sound bar, that worked very well. You would think the market is there but sadly one stop shops(powered sound bars) win out. Def tech is good stuff

It’s just really tough to compare these $400 sound bars to the Mythos that has 5 separate channels, 10 speakers and 350 watts going to it from a proper amp (receiver).

Yamaha has an awesome active atmos soundbar for $1500 with tons of speakers that I believe in but I think many of the rest are gimmicks.

Yea that’s what I was struggling with most of the decent sound bars get up int it the $800-$1000 range and then I still question the sound quality vs a def tech speaker / sound that I am familiar with

When I first started looking at them I was seeing the $1000 price tag but realized that’s what the original price was. I found them for $500 and the SSA-42 for like 400ish it seems like a no brained to me to go for the 50

They also had another one that was a little more but it was the thin speaker design and I had read mix reviews about those

Pretty sure Def Tech stopped production of these so there should be good deals I just wouldn't wait too long.

Which is a shame. There were some great passive soundbars made by speaker manufacturers.

I don't know about the sound bars but I have the DT pro cinema in our media room.

a couple of years ago the sub went out. I called them and had me a new board in the mail the same day no charge.

I absolutely love my GoldenEar sound bar. Bought mine from Crescendo in Baton Rouge. Fantastic for music.

It came in this week and I “temped” it in with the receiver and hung it below the tv on the brackets I had.

That thing was heavy! It looks great and sounds amazing just like any other def tech speaker I have heard.

It was late last night so I really didn’t get to turn it up too loud but it sounds good.

The surround effect is there but not surround sound but the sound quality is great

Don't just crank it up. Speakers have a break in period. They do have moving parts, after all.

No experience with a def tec passive sound bar but I run the UIW series inwall for my 9.1 system. Have a dozen of the 8” in ceiling speakers, 4 out the outdoors, and 4 other inwall. I really like the sound of there speakers. Not too bright not too soft.

I don’t know how I feel about a passive sound bar. To me the draw of a sound bar is just a bar on the wall under a tv...all in one...power and all. If I was going through the hassle of a sound bar that I had to have a separate amp for I’d just get some regular speakers. Can be small to mount on the wall or they may have onwall types you like.

Never even looked at a passive sound bar so I may be missing the point.

1) I already have an av amplifier that was not cheap at the time of purchase
2) i already have a good subwoofer that cost several hundred dollars
3) it sounds better than any powered sound bar have heard at least in the <$800 range
4) it still hangs under my tv like any other sound bar would and you will not see any wires when I complete the installation
