Wow. Now iPhones are the new currency. Unbelievable...
"The total value of the stolen merchandise was estimated to be more than $370,000. The iPhone X, which becomes available in stores Friday, starts at $999 apiece. The suspects haven't yet been caught."
"Stealing iPhones has long been a lucrative business, but Apple's "Find My iPhone" and remote lockout feature have caused a drop in stolen devices. For enterprising thieves, the key is getting an iPhone before those services have been set up."

no, they take the truck manifest and blacklist all those IMEIs so apple/UPS is either covered via insurance or they're out the manufacturing costs.
the phones have zero value. why anyone in 2017 thinks they can sell a blacklisted IMEI phone is beyond me.
i guess people are just dumb and think a phone bought in a back alley will actually work.

So this is what makes those youtube durability tests possible.

its not about the people who stole the phones needed to think they work.. Its about the people who they sell them to thinking that they work

thats what i said. people are gullible but you buy a phone out of the trunk of a car in a back alley, you deserve everything you get.
this is why swappa rules. impossible to happen on that site.

I dunno; I had to insert a SIM before I could set up my iPhone 7. Would this allow phones right out of the box to be deactivated, so they couldn't even be used as a glorified iPod Touch?

I'm sure that they have figured out a way to swap out parts to be able to use the stolen phones to repair legit phones. Is the IMEI only stored in the modem?

I had a weird experience with swappa and a blacklisted phone. I bought a phone from swappa and a year later I went to sell it and they told me it was blacklisted. I called AT&T from the blacklisted phone which never stopped working and they confirmed that it was blacklisted but the rep couldn't explain how I was able to use it. I ended up selling the phone on swappa as blacklisted to someone in India. I'm pretty sure these phones will be able to be used outside the United States even if they're blacklisted here.

Aren’t they still usable as WiFi only devices; essentially like an iPod?

Sure, but you have to insert a SIM to set the phone up, and I'm wondering if that allows them to detect banned IMEIs and shut that shite down even without the user trying to activate cellular service.

well thats all well and good but there are no iphoneX models out there yet

and yes, from my experience..all it takes is a split second with the sim card in (rquired to activate the phone) to turn into a brick if the IMEIs are on the blacklist.
i doubt the average intelligence of whoever stole these would be able to figure out how to circumvent a trillion-dollar company's blacklist scheme.
