So I had been off of cable for like 5 years. And literally the only reason I went back was because of HBO. $75 for 100Mbps Internet+Cable+HBO, $76 for just 100Mbps Internet.

It makes sense, maybe I will get through Game of Thrones, can binge Leftovers, I'll take it.

So I just bought a house as well, fully wired ready to go. I had everything turned on, but have living the last 1.5 months on just a single cable box with a splitter/router. Easy peasy, works fine. So I thought to myself, I guess if I pay for it, I should hook up cable to the rest of the house....

NOPE. So you need a cable box in every room, another $30-40 on the bill, just get basic cable in the other rooms??? I remember it used to be that way with Premium channels, you needed the box, but basic could be hooked up easily. Not anymore.

Not only that, the tech told me, "There used to be a lot of stealing..." Well that's fine, but I'm a paying customer just trying to get cable to the house that I pay for. Find another way to curb stealing.

F you cable companies. I'll run this contract out then go back to internet only. Heck, I might just give up the cable again directly, it makes no sense.

And they wonder why they get bad customer service marks.

ETA: I also wanted the ability to relocate my cable modem and work on setting up a better wifi plan, but seemingly, I'd need them to come back out to do that. So ti isn't about cable only, but flexibility.

Was the smartest thing cable companies did was to transfer from analog to digital cable.

Better quality picture, far less people stealing cable (one of the primary motivators for them to do so), etc.

Why not just go with AmazonFirestick for HBO?

I thought all cable boxes were digital now no? How were you able to splice it?

Actually longer, did the math, 9 years. I buy my own Cable Modems too, so I literally call and setup Internet and never deal with them directly in person, so I had no idea what Cable TV looked like now.

ETA: I've been pretty transient for the last 10 years. Rarely in a location for more than 12 months, just due to promotions and opportunities. Always renting, so cable was easy to call and register information and be good to go or not wanting to do any kind of large scale house work on media.

And automatically upping bills $5-10 per room if they want all over the house. If the cost wasn't attached that would be ok. Or if it were minimal. "$10 for the first box, $10 for up to 4 more boxes."

I don't care about specifically HBO in other rooms, just cable in general. We live far away from family, have a lot of people visit and right next to a ski resort bus stop, when people come over if they want to unwind and chill with ESPN or something, I wanted that option.

It's not something I want to use all of the time, so Basic cable in 4 other rooms is all I was looking for.

Splitter on the Coax...one to a Cable Modem the other to the DVR/X1 machine.

I just feel when you buy cable you buy it for "a house" not "one outlet" that's kind of the point.

This wasn't about stealing, but that was certainly a perk for the cable companies.

Regular analog cable takes up a lot of bandwidth. Just like the government mandated that all OTA broadcasts had to go digital in order to clear up spectrum, the cable companies later cleared up bandwidth on their lines to make way for more modern services.

This includes stuff like higher bandwidth for increasing internet speeds and being able to offer digital channels without requiring special tuning adapter boxes.

More service would be a second house, I don't view a second room as "more service." Like I said, there's always give and take, it used to be that way with Premium channels, and I guess that's fine, but putting all of cable behind a box, with the option to rent boxes only (if I could buy my own boxes like I can cable modems, different discussion).

I guess that's fair if that is the case, so let me buy boxes on the market. The only option is to rent, and you know after a few months, that's just pure profit.

No, the FCC mandates that the cable companies must allow you to rent CableCARDs at a reasonable low fee. You can then buy your own box and plug in the CableCARD.

The most prominent and well-known consumer box is TiVo of course.

Ok that's super helpful. Still a pain, but avoiding cable is usually a pain. I thought TiVo was strictly for recording, not something I really need. That shows you how long I've been out of this Cable TV game.

Thank you.

ETA: Wait TiVo is a monthly cost as well? Ugh. Trying to avoid too many of those. On second though, not a good option. But thanks. I guess I am doubling down on Roku's and Sticks.

This is exactly why i don't have cable.
I've got 7 tvs. I'm not paying another $50/month in rental shite.
I have Roku's and Firetvs at those tv's now.

You would think that the cable companies that offer internet would have some type of app that you could stream their cable tv services through, and it be something that is tied to just your house's internet to prevent sharing if they are that worried about it.

I personally would take it one step further. I don't want cable, i simply want access to apps like WatchESPN, FoxSportsGo, TNT, NBCSports, Nick Jr, Disney Jr, ABC/NBC/FOX/CW, etc. I would pay Cox $20/month simply for a log in to their cable lineup, and that's it. They don't need to install anything other than my internet, which i already have. Hell they can limit it to two devices at a time or somethign like that for all i care, maybe charge more for more streams.

Their argument that Sling and Vue and all are $35/month while adding cable is $20/month is a lie. Yeah it's $20/month, if i don't have any cable boxes. Add a HD DVR, and 3 cable boxes and all of a sudden it's $50/month. Add in the ridiculous fees, taxes, and other random crap and it's $60/month.
How about you offer me something to compete with the Slings. Can't be that difficult for people like Cox.

Yup. So you know the pain. It doesn't make sense, and it isn't the setup it used to be. There's always give and take. I pay Netflix a few bucks extra and I get 4 simultaneous streams. That's all I need. I don't want more equipment that break, more fees tacked on for each thing, more things that are not mine to worry about, etc. It's completely convoluted and b.s.

Their problem: If I have to tack on fees and stuff to an account anyways, I'm not going to buy their subpar versions for sure. So if I have to add cost, I'm going to go add the best in class cost. Netflix's app is literally always going to be better than Comcast's for watching movies.

$10 for the first box and $10 for up to 4 more total boxes. That would be fine with me. Or something similar.

Looking at TiVo's website it looks like they solved it with the TiVo Mini. Now, it's still extra monthly cost, but that's the setup to go for. But I shouldn't be paying another company money to get the best out of another company I am paying money to.

It's going to be easy to go to Vue or Hulu next year if I am adding cost anyways instead of buying more boxes. I'd rather buy $150 Roku's or FireTV's every 3-4 years than rent anything.

i can handle one wire coming into my house to connect to the stupid modem.

any additional wiring/boxes in 2017 is nothing more than a money-grab.

they still want to make you feel like you're getting something special because you can finish the stupid movie in your bedroom that you started in the den.

EAT. A. BAG. OF. DICKS.

OH OH OH OH OH!!!!

here's the best fricking part? ARE YOU READY??

apparently its A-frickING-OK for you to watch comcast on a fricking 8" tablet or cellphone anywhere in your house...they just don't want you to be able to watch that same TV show on..

The house I just bought was nicely remodeled and they rewired everything. Coax and CAT5 in every room, so I thought "Sweet, it will be easy to integrate media everywhere." Now, the CAT5 does make it easier even than the Coax, but some people just like browsing cable sometimes.

Yeah I don't care about this either. Just want some channel surfing in the non-media rooms, that's it.

you get what i'm saying? they literally REMOVED the ability that i had to watch the news on TV with a bullshite "we detect you are casting your screen so NO frickING SOUP FOR YOU, enjoy finishing the local news on your tiny fricking cellphone screen" lock

Yeah that's pretty low. Wow. Now I get it.

It just makes it easy to turn it back off. I went 9 years without dealing with Cable TV, and the value prop was pretty good with their deal. I'll watch my HBO stuff enjoy DVR for a year, and probably go back to apps and streams. And probably buy Hulu next year. Sure they get another $1000 out of me, so I guess it's worth it to them, but I won't be renewing the TV package.
