Well he said he paid 180 total so there's that.

OK I promise a writeup shortly and lots of pics.
Turns out I had a c wire after all so those wiring kits are unneeded. That will drop my total cost to $141.
The c wires weren't hooked up at either end so I still had to splice the wire to get to it and connect it at the HVAC end but less trouble than doing the add-a-wire thing.
I'll send those wire kits back unless someone here wants them.. I'll sell to you at my cost. They're unused but I'll still go through that in my run through so you can see what needs to happen if you are lacking a 5th wire. It's easy and ingenious.
Whodat you probably noticed you only pay for shipping once even if you order 2 units.
I had several challenges along the way but they are rocking now so I'll also document that.

I've got a brand new house and my units are gas, not electric. Pretty sure the wiring should be there for me. Should just be plug n play.

I installed the Honeywell RTH9580WF to replace a 15 year old thermostat that came with my house. Easy install and their is a video how to do it on Honeywell's site. Good thermostat but a little pricey.
Only mistake I made installing was I did not pay attention to the setup of the furnace and chose electric instead of gas which is what I have. Last week the furnace fan would turn on with no heat until I changed it to gas.

done for now
Check it out. WHODAT? Did you buy from that same seller on Amazon? If so, make sure you follow my steps to RESET it before installation. VERY IMPORTANT.
Also, I need to add 2 sections
- WINK APP control
- VENSTAR add-a-wire instructions (but these are incredibly easy if you watch their video)
*VENSTAR* requires these changes at THERMOSTAT
W doesn't change
R doesn't change
G moves to C
Y (YELLOW) wire gets splitter
splitter green goes to G (fan)
splitter yellow goes to Y (compressor)
Then you follow the same steps at the HVAC to rewire them on that end as well.
The venstar doohickey is INGENIUS. I'm sorry I didn't get to use them.

because you are describing how to install this shite on your specific set up, and it is not adding anything that is not already available online. Plus, the walkthroughs via honeywell are like choose-your-own adventure style based on THE EXACT SYSTEM they are installing. Does your system have this? go to this point. etc. Additionally, your setup is the easiest to install as you already have a c-wire, but you are making it sound 10 times more complicated than it is. The hardest installations don't have a c-wire and you need to use the jumpers. If you really wanted to help people, detail that procedure, since most houses are older and don't have this luxury. This one issue (no c-wire) was the only thing that caused my installation to take longer than 15 minutes.
So for the 2 people that may have your exact setup, this helps. For everyone else, it will only serve to confuse them more.
I respect your efforts and applaud your providing information; however, its just not adding to anything that is not already available online. In my line of work, repeating information which is already available is severely frowned upon.
ETA: the add-a-wire thing is unnecessary, all you need is a little jumper at the thermostat and at the unit.

i mentioned early on its describing the full process from beginning to end on a conventional gas furnace HVAC and i think its very useful to have all the steps in one place.
sure there's a zillion thermostat install videos but i put everything from the inexpensive purchase price to the step-by-step walkthrough in one post.
i think there's value in that.

everything i researched indicated the correct way to solve the problem is using the add-a-wire kit. anything else is a hack and i'd rather do it the right way and learn while doing it.

thanks for the walk-through. I appreciate it, even if that douche doesn't. Hey douche, go away.
