Trying to figure out what all I need to buy and could use some help. I have 3 young kids and just looking to buy one switch that we connect to the tv. I would like to have enough remotes for all 3 kids + myself to play games like Mario Kart.

My current plan is to buy an OLED switch for $350 and 3 extra joy one for $79 each.

What else am I missing or not thinking of?

Memory card. Get at least 128gb or hell 256gb if there's a good Amazon prime deal. Your Nintendo experience will come to a screeching halt very quickly with the built in memory limitations.

Also I would go digital for most games and they'll download right onto that memory card and you have nothing to carry extra. If someone stole your switch and you had a bunch of game carts in the case or you dropped that postage stamp sized cart somewhere, the game is gone forever. If you buy digital you just set up a new switch and redownload them all for free so you never lose anything.

I would also highly recommend a screen protector. That screen will get scratched sooner rather than later if not.

Also just bite the bullet and pay the $19/year for Nintendo service. They back up all your data and when my kid's switch got fried he was in tears thinking his 837 Minecraft worlds were gone forever. Because he had the Nintendo service when we got him a replacement switch and redownloaded Minecraft, Nintendo had all his saved crap and I wasn't expecting that. He was so happy because I had told him he was going to have to start over.

Eta set up the parental controls app on your phone immediately!!! Don't sleep on this. The switch is very fun but can quickly get overused (see my Minecraft comment above) and the app on your iphone or Android can monitor exactly what your kid is doing and shut it off if they go over a given daily time threshold.

You also get monthly usage reports and lots of control over what they are exposed to without so much as going near the switch. Try to instill good habits from the start then you can relax them as you see fit.

Nintendo is fun as a mug I won't lie. We love playing Lego games together, Mario Cart and really any Mario game. It's a great device.

I was in your exact situation a couple Christmases ago.

The switch comes with one set of joy cons. I say "a set" because theoretically that's actually two controllers. You can play "most" games with a single joy con. And with little kids, they may prefer the smaller controller like that for their small hands (my littlest does).

So to start with, I'd buy one extra Joy Con set:

...and one pro controller (for you):
LINK

That setup will give you 5 controllers, or 3 "full size" controllers. I'd start there, and then see what people like playing with. You can always run out to walmart and get another one the same day they open the switch.

You'll need a memory card like someone else mentioned. A carrying case for car trips is a good idea too.

As for games, Mario Kart is a must. Me and the boy had a great time playing Luigi's Mansion together. The girls love Animal Crossing.

Enjoy

i call that 'minecraft for girls'.

my wife's 3 married sisters (in their late 20s and early 30s) are absolutely obsessed. i couldn't believe it when they all pulled out switches at the beach and were sitting around the house saying 'hey did you down to your mailbox? i sent you a card' and 'i booked a flight to visit you on your island later today'

lord help us.

Stupid question but I have a handful of Xbox, nVidia and even Google Stadia remotes around the house. Will those connect in any way to the switch to allow my girls and wife and I to play?

i *think* the switch will support bluetooth controllers but you might want to get the brand & model #s from those and google it. i know there are dozens of knock-off amazon sellers who make off-brand remotes for the switch but i'm not sure what the requirements are to pair with it.

ETA dirty little secret: the switch is just a android tablet there are some tear-down videos that show you how to get into the bootloader and mess stuff up so any 'lockdown' of a particular bluetooth controller would likely be coming from something nintendo put in place to block certain types of devices from pairing, not something native to the OS.

you'll probably want to plan on the nintendo online subscription. it isn't much ($20/yr maybe?) but annoying none the less. With it you get access to all the old NES and SNES games. There is also an expansion subscription that gets you some N64 stuff.

Buy Breath of the Wild and a Pro controller. Put it on the big screen and let them watch as you play it through. Fun as shite.

If you are going to play get the Nintendo Pro Controller or get one of the 8BitDo Pro Controllers...I have an 8BitDo and it is great..never had any issues with it.

The kids are probably good with the joy cons, but they can't keep up with my l33t Mario Maker skills

Get the pro controllers, they are much better for playing on the tv. Mario party is the only game we’ve gotten that requires the joy cons

I had the original NES with a ton of games that still worked. I lost it in Hurricane Ida along with my house. I might have been just as upset to lose the NES as the house.

I have been looking into Nintendo Switch. Is it possible to download the original NES Mario games on this console?

With a nintendo only subscription (like $16/yr) you can get access to quite a lot of NES and SNES games. There is also an expansion subscription that can get you access to N64 and Gensis games. You might research that and what games come included.

Yes...you need to purchase a subscription through Nintendo which is like 8-10 bucks/month or something like that maybe less IDK. But that gets you SMB, SMB2, SMB3, SMB:All Stars, SMW, SMW2: Yoshi's Island (I think).

If you pay a little more and get the online subscription tier that gets you the N64 game I think you get SM64 and maybe the SM RPG.

Couple of questions as we're about to pull the trigger on the latest 350$ switch for my oldest daughters birthday.
1) If she gets the switch with the dock, how can my whole family play? Mainly my youngest daughter who's gonna be sad.

2) Potentially for my youngest daughter, looking into the Switch Light. What's the verdict on those? If we buy 1 game, can they both play on the separate devices?

Buy the Switch and the base that charges it/connects to TV via HDMI cable. Buy 2-3 Pro controllers at about $50 each. The base has 2 USB ports to charge the controllers. The charging cords for the controllers are USB-A to USB-C, so you can always charge controllers by connecting to a wall plug too.

Second the memory card stuff, the online subscription (get the family one) and the digital games. My 11 year old and I play Mario Kart with my brother who lives in Montana all the time.

No unfortunately not, even if you download it and have the same account logged in on both it will only allow you to play it on one at a time.

I believe the switch lite can not be docked, we just gave our youngest the older one when he was ready and got the oldest the new led one since he takes care of it better.

We use that one now as the main one and I play with them on the tv all the time.

Is the OLED version worth it compared to the original for 299?

100%. once you've picked up an OLED and seen how much more beatiful that screen is (plus its bigger) the $50 is a drop in the bucket. i wouldn't even consider the older model for that difference. thats like ONE game.
