Instructions for removing obnoxiously loud AT&T splash on boot. Root required.
Using your favorite File Manager with root permissions:
1: Open /oem/media
2: Mount r/w.
3: Remove or rename the file bootanimation.zip
4: Reboot

I use the app 'Boot Animations' off the Play Store, also requires root.
They have a really sweet custom Nexus one I've used for a long time.

You'll probably still have to get rid of the AT&T one. It's on a different partition apparently. It was seriously loud as frick.

What's your favorite file manager?
If y'all have never used an iPhone, you really have to understand how fricking different this is. Even the act of renaming a fricking file on a phone is baffling to me.

I've used Astro for years. IDK if it's still the best or not.

I know the opposite; I was always an Android user. I broke my Galaxy S4 so I went get a Windows phone and was lost for a few weeks, then I picked up an iPhone 5 and was lost all over again

I had iPhone from the original through the 4S. Used to develop some themes for Cydia on mmi.
Will never ever go back, either.

I like Root Explorer, but there are probably free ones that are sufficient. I bought it a long time ago, before I knew any better. I'd just search File Manager in Play Store and pick one of the top hits.

File Manager (Explorer) from Cheetah Mobile.

Also, the AT&T globe on the back apparently just scrapes off easily with a credit card.

OK, I'm rooted now.
Time to get rid of this comically loud AT&T animation.
Seriously, the logo animation + sound is 10/10 trolling from AT&T.

2: Mount r/w.
Probably obvious, but what does this mean?
EDIT: nevermind, figured it out, sort of. Downloaded an app called mount/system rw ro, and then I installed 4 file explorer apps before finding one that would let me rename the zip file.
But the AT&T Splash is gone.

Most root file managers open important stuff read only by default. You have to tell it to open in read/write mode.

OK, that's what I figured, but after mounting r/w with that app and granting super user permissions for several file manager apps, only one of the apps actually did what I needed it to do -- the free version of Root Browser.

mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
Type that in terminal command.

Thank you.
I was looking at getting into a terminal emulator and mounting ... but i couldn't figure out what to mount from there.

Still get that it's a read-only file system. Not using a file manager, went to the /oem/media directory and did "mv bootanimation.zip bootanimation1.zip"
Wrong partition?

Hmm, I wouldn't say easily, or maybe I'm just being too gentle, but it's not budging.
