Yea, I guess I've never used a VPN so do you connect to it vs. your home WiFi?

Assuming you're talking about using a PC/Mac to do this most services will have pretty clear instructions on how to connect. You can also set it up on some of the streaming boxes like FireTV and your mobile phones.

I feel like your ISP could still simply track how much bandwidth your pulling and limit the hell out of that.

I suppose ISPs could end up throttling VPN traffic but I can't imagine someone that has gone to the trouble of VPN and Torrents is a candidate to come back to their cable TV service. Moving to a system of data caps and overage charges would be a better way to make up the lost revenue.

A VPN in simple terms is just a tunnel that prevents people outside the tunnel (including your ISP) from seeing what your are doing inside the tunnel. It isn't something you "connect" to, you just turn it on.

Torrents are fine on private sites such as IPTorrerents, it is illegal for ISPs to send letters since it is invite only. If you are worried about it a VPN or a seed box are options to protect yourself.

I just paid for Plex Pass, lifetime for $75 although I've had Plex for 5ish years so I think I got a good deal. It is "step 1" in getting my wife off of her dependency on cable; she already uses Plex for movies, so since she is used to the interface I'm hoping to get her using it for her local shows. I'm excited about being able to DVR/stream, to mobile devices, the NFL games that I miss when I'm out of town and the saints aren't on the local channels. It also allows you (I think) to download local copies of your media library for those planes rides or times I'm in places with bad service.

Get a cheap computer with the best processor you can, and the rest of the setup is pretty easy. It's been a challenge cutting the cord since my wife doesn't want to go through there hassle that cutting the cord often brings...Plex is helping me ease her away from the Xfinity box.

at the risk of sounding..uh...'illegal'...if you own these disk already you can find nice 1080p & UHD copies already ripped and looking good online. its a damn shame the pysical media doesnt come with free use (aka plex) versions so you don't have to kill yourself trying to rip it with shitty software and doing a mediocre job.

I have read legislation that if you own a DVD or game that it is legal to possess a copy of it.. regardless how it was ripped. This was in some older research though from years ago when I was making backup copies of my video games.

That would be a neat idea though. If your purchased disc came with the option to also back it up (without needed ripping software) Like possibly a download link.

If a friend wanted to find said site, where might he or she go?

I can tell you a really easy way to get content and without going the torrent route is to get a chrome extension called video downloader professional. Google it.. add the extension to your chrome browser.. then do a google search for any movie and the words watch online free.. now you to whatever links come up.. usually sites like 123movies or putlocker.. etc.. it doesn't matter.. then hit play on the movie site.. (usually a popup will happen.. just exit out of it) then you may have to hit play again on the video. now pause the video.. and look at the top right of your chrome browser where that new extension should be.. click it and a pull down menu should happen and you will have the option to directly download that video to your hard drive..

then just move those files to wherever your plex looks for videos.. or set your movie folder as your download folder.

This extension is so wonderful.. you can just about download any video on any website with it.. and you don't even have to watch the movie while it downloads..

I would not mess with VPNs and torrenting like that. It just always seemed too slow for me.

What I would do is pay for a monthly online cloud service that does all the torrenting on their own system and provides an actual direct download link. The cloud service is nice, because you can also stream directly from it on any device.

I personally recommend a website called premiumize.me.. then on any torrent site open the file through premiumize.me's website via magnet link.. (set all magnet links to open through premiumize) instead of a standard torrent program. Often times the movie you find is already added onto their server from someone else.. so there is no wait time whatsoever to stream or directly dl.

Lastly, you can have people share their plex libraries with you and you just scroll through the different servers on a drop down menu and select it. If you'd ever like me to add you to my server I would gladly do so. I have a pretty large plex library. I've been building my movie collection for like 8 years though. There is a Reddit thread dedicated to plex sharing and people offering to share their servers for free as well.

You either pay for a VPN

If you are paying for a VPN, I really just highly recommend the route I took in paying for a CLOUD Based torrenting site like premiumize and no VPN is needed. Or something called a seed box.

Just was talking to my wife a few days about this concept. That to me is a great business venture for a company like Vudu. Allow me to pay 29.99$ for the UHD version of say... Star Wars. Then let me pay an extra 2-5$ to download that for a Plex server or to have a backup.

I'd do that EVERY purchase.

What's your email address? I'll email you. I really just want to watch a movie or 2 and continue to grow my own library over time. Much like you've done, just 8 years later!

ETA: Can you not private message or email through TD?

I've got a Plex server running on my Mac which my family uses to watch movies I've downloaded through torrents. My kids use it with no problems on the Apple TV. This Christmas I just got a 4 TB external hard drive which I'm using for storage. I've always downloaded torrents from public sites and never had a problem except for Warner Brothers DC movies. I've gotten letters from my ISP for downloading Wonder Woman and Justice League.

I might try that Chrome extension mentioned earlier.

I mean, for my 2 cents I'd just get a VPN. The other seems like a lot more work. Think I pay about 7 bucks a month and that covers everything. Use it on my phone at work which unblocks TD. And of course run torrents through it at pretty great speeds.

On most of those torrents though, don't you also have to share or the movie expires? Hell, I wouldn't even know how to open a .torrent file or what to do even if I got one but I've never tried.

No. Once the file reaches 100 percent it's yours on your computer. Now if you use a private tracker they will require you to continue to upload it. That may be what you're thinking of.

It can be kind of challenging to set up if you're brand new, but there are thousands of guides to walk you through it. After you set it up it's so simple. Make sure your VPN is on, go to the site, click the magnet link, and you're done. (Aside from adding subtitles.)

Rarbg.to is all I ever really need.

I may have to try a VPN just to learn about VPNs (I've got a lot to learn there alone) and try and grab a movie and see what happens.
The irony is, I'm such a nice guy, I'd go buy the damn movie just to have it on Amazon or whatever, I just want the digital version for plex, etc.

ETA: Any suggestions on VPNs? I've seen PIA and NordVPN. I'm not sure I want to commit to a 2 yr contract on these though, even if it is only 3-5$ a month.

PIA is what I've used twice now. I just pay monthly. It's pretty user friendly, although if you have slow speeds, some of the tinkering may require some learning.

It isn't a lot of work at all. You just set it to open magnet links through it. You could copy the magnet link by right clicking and pasting it to the download section, but not need. And from then on it opens every torrent link through the site instead of through a torrent program. What I really enjoy is that often most of the torrents are already on there so you quickly have a direct download link.

And like I said, it's even more awesome because it stores your stuff online for easy access as well.. so you don't even have to download it to your computer ever.. This is cool if you are away from your PC but still want to download stuff and watch from your cloud. I actually use my phone often to copy torrent links and paste into premiumize.me's downloader and watch on my phone.

I also think there are apps for some of these cloud torrenting sites.. so you could just install that as well on a firestrick or maybe kodi plugin. It's so quick and I don't need to run any software on my pc.

Another nice feature is you can play the file before even downloading it to your hard drive.

I just saw your library, nice nice! You have the 1950 Cinderella that my daughter craves that we don’t have and they don’t sell. Damn Disney and their limited releases!!

Feel free to say no way, but is it possible to enable me to sync? Wouldn’t that allow me to download a digital copy of Cinderella? I fully understand if you don’t want me downloading from your home internet though.

Funny how most people do this for great movies and new stuff and my arse is trying to get 1950 Cinderella! Ha!!!
