So my existing laptop is fried and I'm looking for recommendations on a new one. Seems like I go through laptops about every 2-4 years, so I'm tired of dropping $1,500+ on something that's going to break on me in a couple of years, so thought I'd come to you guys for help.

Here are my uses/needs/wants: Laptop will be primary for just surfing the net, hanging out on TD, shopping, streaming video services and occasionally work (using MS Office suite of programs - word, excel, etc.). No gaming. No engineering or other high tech uses.

I'd like something in the 13" range with a touch screen. My last 2 have been 2-in-1's, but I don't use that feature much, so not important to me. I really have no idea on my needs as far as RAM or memory. I used to buy top of the line stuff (just because bigger is better right? not b/c of any specific needs), but like I said, not interested in dropping another $1,500. I'd like to keep this under $1,000 if possible.

SO I'm thinking maybe 16 MB RAM instead of 32? Do I need SSD hard drive or no? What about combo drives where part is SSD and part not. I'm not very tech savvy, so really don't know what I need in those areas or processor speed, etc., for the basic uses I'll be making of the computer.

I don't want a Mac, so keep it in Windows PC family. The last 2 computers I have had were HP spectres, which I've liked, other than the fact that they've crapped out on me in 2-4 years each.

Anyway, any advice on what I should look at would be appreciated - either specific computers, brands, or features/hardware. TIA.

Dell was having a pretty nice sale on the 4th and i got an Inspiron 15 (ryzen7, 16gn, 512ssd) for $700. The smaller 14” was $50 more but didnt opt for it, as this is a business expense for my side-gig. Im really happy with it. Check their site to see if they have anything that meets your needs.

Dell and Lenovo would be my top choices, and possibly Asus (gf likes hers).

I bought the xps 13 because they offer a 1920 x 1200 vs 1920 x 1080 display. They offer the same display with touch. There is also a 4k option but it is $, probably overkill for a 13" monitor, and it drains the battery quicker.

It sounds like you could get by with 16GB of ram (I got 32 since it is soldered to the motherboard and isn't easily upgradeable). I'd recommend at least an ssd, preferably nvme like the xps. Tbh I didn't even think laptops came with spinning drives these days. The drive is relatively easy to change out so go with the 256gb drive if it'll work and upgrade later if needed.

I use my laptop exactly as you are needing. Had a Surface Pro 4 that lasted about 6 years and loved it. Just bought a Surface Laptop 4 13.5” as I wanted to go back to a more traditional laptop and have been enjoying the hell out of it. Super light and portable and runs super quick. I’d highly recommend it, but they are a little pricey.
