Figured this was the board for my question.
Basically, my work car has terrible factory speakers and I need to upgrade to something better.
Not looking for anything over the top in the least, I only listen to audio books when I'm traveling. (I have to practically turn the volume to max on the interstate)
I figure 4 aftermarket door speakers would suffice. Do I need an Amp for that?
Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

No, your head unit should power them just fine. However...

Based on the symptoms your describe, it sounds like you've blown the amp in your head unit. If you're handy at all.

Get replacement speakers with higher sensitivity (90db+). More volume with less watts.
