Need better internet speeds

Please be patient, I am not one to know many specifics. My internet speeds are fine for all the things I do, even streaming movies. The issue is that my kids are doing some gaming and the 'lags' make it hard for them to do well in the games.
I have ATT DSL, going to a NVG510 modem. I do the little speedtest on my phone, it shows a 6.6mbps download speed.
What is the easiest way to up the performance. I can spend a couple hundred bucks on it if it makes the gaming more enjoyable.
The gaming console is located approximately 70 feet from the modem, and has about 4 walls between. I dont know if any of that matters or not. TIA

Run an ethernet cable from your router to the gaming console.

This will always be the correct answer. Wifi is slower and has more lag than a hard wire.
Another possibility is to upgrade to faster speeds than you have now.

You need more bandwidth plain and simple.

Is that the fastest package available from ATT? Hardwire the xbox or whatever.

What's the speed package you have with ATT?
Are their gaming systems connected to your DSL via wireless or via ethernet?

I don’t know that answer.
It is wireless. ATT is laying fiber in our neighborhood right now. I am hoping that will help??
How slow is 6.6 mbps?

That’s what I thought. I will get w ATT in the morning and see what I am paying for

If ATT is running fiber to your neighborhood then it's a safe bet you should be getting far more bandwidth than what your speed test is showing (you should check your ATT bill or log into their website to make sure though).
First thing you need to do is get an ethernet cable and wire it up to the nearest computer/laptop then run a speed test from this site.
If your bandwidth from that speed test is considerably lower than your contracted speed then contact ATT. DSL contracts guarantee a certain bandwidth.
If your bandwidth is good then run the same speed test from that same computer while connected to your wifi and see what speeds you get. If the speeds are lower then it's likely your router.
If the speeds are good then it is likely distance between the consoles and the router and/or the walls between them.

If you're tech savvy, look into getting a raspberry pi and using "pi-hole" this blocks virtually all ads and pop ups on websites which in turn causes your speeds to improve. I use it at my house and have noticed better performance all around.

I have ATT fiber gigabit and getting 700 Mbps download and 900 upload Mbps. Upload is just as important for online gaming. You want at least 50-100 Mbps
For online gaming you should avoid wifi . As others mentioned using an ethernet cable is the way to go.
More than likely you can't just run an ethernet cable from your router to your gaming machine. At least not withough alot of hassle. The next best option is to use powerline networking.

I added this to my FireTV Box when I was having some buffering issues and it has performed great:
TRENDnet Powerline Adaptor
You’re speeds are slow, even for AT&T standards. You should at least be getting 20-25 mbps download speeds. I would definitely call them and complain. Fiber will change your whole world as far as speed. I wish they would run it in my old arse neighborhood.

That depends...
For all of the online games I can think of all you're really sending/receiving is telemtry with the sending being far less than the receiving. As a minimum you want 3 down, 1 up and a ping of 150ms (the ping is a maximum, if you want to be technical). That's bare minimum and only if you have just one person playing from your house and nothing else going on (no one streaming movies, posting on TD, etc).
A general rule of thumb is that for every person playing from your location you want to double those speeds (and half the ping time). Again, this is the bare minimum you'll want for a passable experience.
Add in someone streaming movies and that's another 3-5 (for HD, 4k or Ultra HD would start around 25).
So for 2 players (depending on the game) and someone streaming movies you can get by with 25, but more is always better.
I have an older computer running a bitcoin miner, another playing DCUO and the wife streaming The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel all at the same time and don't miss a beat with 50down/5up.

Good lord, how did this get past me..KISS (keep it simple, stupid)...
Wire what you can and invest the rest into a good router..Some of the answers in here that have Zero to do with the actual issue...
