my dad is turning 70 and has asked for a drone with a camera. i'm assuming this is to do weird and pervy things, but he's old and i'm not asking questions.

my mom asked me to find one online since she doesn't know how to use the internet. i obviously can look on amazon, but i have no idea what to look for. everything i'm finding looks like it wants to use the phone for the video or something (the remote shows a phone mounted on the controller) and he has a 15 year old iphone 5 so i'm not sure that will work.

she told me that the limit is $500. i'm not asking for people to shop for me (it would be appreciated,) but for what i need to be looking for in regard to an 70 year old man who is moderately decent with technology... but is still 70 years old.

Just buy him $500 worth of porn or better yet show him pornhub and pocket the $500.

I'm bias to DJI. I've flow everything including Phantoms, Mavic, Insipires, M210 and M600. So naturally I would suggest a DJI.

I however haven't flown the Spark which would fall into your price range. I'm sure there are others cheaper which may be better if you think its something he will give a try and then put aside and not get any use from, but DJI is a quality product and easy to use. I'm sure the Spark would be the same.

There are some decent drones out there for that price, but he should up the budget slightly.

depending on where he plans to use it, I'd highly recommend sticking with DJI since their obstacle avoidance is superior to pretty much everyone

The Spark fits that budget, but upping to $700 can get you the Mavic Air

DO NOT bother to Check out the Blade720. Check out the story behind it also.

After further review, I revised my original statement.

I researched the Spark and went and looked at one at bestbuy since I was there for something else. Looks like the right price and amount of technology for a beginner. Of course I have no idea what I’m doing, but this gave me a start.

I’ll research the blade as well.

Thank y’all very much for at least throwing out some models.

DJI Spark is the answer. I had one but upgraded to a Mavic, but the Spark sounds perfect for what you are looking for.

Although rumors are that a Spark 2 might come out soon. So you can wait for that to either get a cheaper Spark or just get the Spark 2.

I hope your dad is a lot more tech savvy than your mom, otherwise this drone won’t survive its first flight.

I would love to have one to inspect my roof. Also, I like making videos and would like an above ground perspective for many of my videos.

Bumping an old thread but thanks for the advice. I recommended the spark to my mom, she hilariously bought a cheaper one that flew once and died and she returned it and got the spark at my second recommendation and he has liked it and done a few shooting events since then.

Appreciate the recommendations!

My 70 yr old father-in-law mentioned a few times that he wanted a drone. Once he starts on something, he will buy it within 24 hours.

Next time we went to his house, I saw the box for a drone in his garage. Never saw him fly it or heard him mention it again.
