Most important invention of the last 50 years- the internet or the microchip?

This is a spinoff from the OT.
I don't have extensive tech knowledge so I tend to want to say the internet. That was the consensus on the OT...but would the internet have been possible without microchips (microprocessors, memory chips,...)? The argument for second place is obviously strong, can the argument be made for first place or is it not even close?

Nothing in modern technology would be possible without the microchip.

You absolutely can. The microchip was invented way before the internet was a thing.
Microchip #1 for sure.

And wheels were invented before cars as well.

And wheels were invented before cars as well.
Same as your example. Wheels are still valuable if cars did not exist and can be used in many other ways. Cars however, are nothing without wheels.

Cant have one without the other.
That being said, The Internet is up there with the printing press and the wheel as far as next step of human evolution in my opinion. Virtually every human on earth now carries the equivalent of every library on earth in a little box in their pocket. Thats some quantum leap shite.

Because the Internet wouldn't exist without the invention of the micro chip, the microchip is the obvious answer to the op question.
A better question would be.... "Taking away the fact that the Internet wouldn't exist without the microchip, what invention was a bigger leap and/or more important, the Internet or the microchip"
I would think the answer is still the microchip
