Ok, so this is my first time building a PC and I'm building one without an optical drive, because I rarely use it now. Further, the case I want doesn't even have a spot for it.

I found that you can buy a USB stick with Windows on it for $200.00. But is there a way to just buy the DVD (which sells for $139) and then download it onto a USB drive using the product key?

Thanks in advance guys.

Go to YouTube and lookup how to flash windows using a USB. Go to Google and type "windows key cheap". Download windows on pc and activate with key. Saved you 150

Download the Windows 10 ISO straight from Microsoft

Then use a program to "burn" the ISO to a usb stick. There are tons of programs that do this, and I'm not sure which is the "best". Just search "ISO to USB" and pick one. Boot the new PC from the usb stick and install.

Windows will probably run just fine for a long time (forever?) without being activated with a product key, it'll just have some restrictions and show a watermark or something. If you absolutely must activate, buy a key from a third party for like $30. Kinguin is pretty reputable, I think.

ETA: Make sure you buy a key for the right version (home/pro/whatever).

Is this legit, or will I have PC aids shortly after?

It's just a product key, it will either work or it won't (or it will work THEN it won't). It can't install anything on your machine.

You can find a lot of reports of people being sold bum keys, but kinguin usually gives you a new one if so.

Are they "legit"? Yes, they are legit keys. Supposedly the key resellers get them in bulk from OEM's that had too many of them, that's why they're so cheap. And the fact that Microsoft hasn't shut them down yet tells me that they're legal.

Pretty sure this is correct... essentially, these keys were already paid for by OEMs at insanely low prices... (they likely write these off as losses and then offload them as well). Nothing about a product key has any ability to impact your computer. As stated.. it'll either work, it won't, or you might get some kind of warning/need to add key again later... (less likely)

So I clicked your link and it allows you to download it straight to a USB stick. Is that the right thing to select or do I need to make an ISO file as you said previously, then "burn" to a USB stick?

Thanks everyone for your help so far.

No, if you save an ISO file to a usb stick then you just have a usb stick with a big ISO file on it. The ISO file is actually an "image" of the boot disk needed, and it contains a whole directory structure with all the files in it. That's why you need a program that specifically writes ISO files to media. Someone pointed out that microsoft provides such a program, you should probably use that.

Can confirm. Kinguin is the way to go. Have done it many times.

Download the free iso from Microsoft. Install windows. Then buy a key of kinguin.
