Looking to get my wife a camera for her bday in March and need some recommendations as I’m as ignorant as it comes with this stuff.

I want to get her something nice (around $500 range but can stretch a little more if it’s worth it).
Also something that won’t be overwhelming to learn at first.

So what do I need to look for??

Look into a Sony mirrorless. They are small and relatively inexpensive.
Pentax makes a small mirrorless one too.

Put either on Auto and you'll get great pictures.

Sony Alpha 7? I found one for $998 w/ a 28-70mm lens. I mean if y’all think there’s that much difference in a camera like that vs one that’s $500 then I’ll listen. That’s why I came here.

Mirrorless for more $ but an older model (newer models much more expensive)

Using a phone is better than most low range camera options. Typically need to approach closer to $1000 budget to start seeing the difference assuming your wife learns how to use the camera correctly.

Huge limitations compared to DSLR or mirrorless. In ideal conditions with little movement a phone will do fine

$500 budget, Nikon D3xxx w/kit lens or Canon T6 w/kit lens

Don get the Sony. The menu system is wonky. It's been said that it's an electronic device that doubles as a camera.

Consider buying a refurbished model directly from the manufacturer. I’m not sure if Nikon does this but I know Canon does. They go over each product by hand and it comes with a warranty. It’s a good way to save some cash.

Sony Alpha 7
I bought my wife a sony A6000 mirrorless at Lakeside photoworks for a little over $500. We both really like the camera as its compact and it takes very nice pictures. It has middle of the road features but is more than any novice like ourselves would need. I also bout the long lens and the 35mm prime lens for different shooting.

It also has an app that you can send the pictures to a phone. It does work but can be a little cumbersome. Just takes some getting used to but it does help if she wants to share pictures pretty quickly from her camera and send to family/friends.

Depending on her level of skill, i'd recommend taking a class they offer on how to use the camera and general picture taking tips. We still need to do that to unlock the other features we are clueless on to take better pictures.
