Looking at new smart TVs and it's depressing.

Do they all run ads now and track you? It seems like every story is about how to change settings to opt out of some of the tracking but at the end of the day you're really only getting the illusion of control.
I'm guessing some smart people (kork?) Oh this board have figured out a way to block this at the router or something. I would love to hear from anyone who is successfully blocking these intrusive analytics.
Is there any TV to avoid? I thought TCL with Roku built in might be a good choice but hell.. That seems like the worst of the bunch with ads you can't turn off.
There's a simple reason your new smart TV was so affordable: It's collecting and selling your data, and serving you ads

TCL uses the Roku TV system, which is also used in sets made by Hisense, Hitachi, Insignia, Philips, RCA, and Sharp. ... "Opting out of ACR does not affect collection of information about the use of Roku streaming channels." Under Advertising, you can also choose to limit ad tracking.

I have a Sony Android TV and it has no ads.
I might have turned all that stuff off when I got it but I don’t remember.

i go back and forth on this. i gave up in the late 00s about being tracked, but in this case, i don't really need a smart TV so i look for options without it

Your cable providers/internet providers already track you anyway
Posted on 5/29/19 at 6:52 am to CAD703X
Don't connect the TV to internet. Use the streaming device of your choice.

yeah it's impossible to avoid it unless you go off the grid, basically. at least with a TV it's in a centralized location
it's not like streaming apps you'd use on the "smart" part don't already track your viewing anyway (i mean if you just use them through another device). this is just one more company that gets to view the data. i guess it's a form of democratization, if you will.

Pretty much what I did, not sure how it affects tracking but I find the method offers a much smoother experience.
Buy tv: put it online to update firmware
Take tv offline: use Nvidia shield box on every tv
Keeps each interface and menu operating the same plus it's much faster and stable than what any of the TV's offer.

I was looking at the tcl 6 series because it already has a Roku built in but it looks like an adware infested version.

I don't see any ads on my TCL 6 series.

Really? I probably read too much online. So it doesn't try to sell you Fandango tickets whenever you try to do something?

This is a great television, but you could easily miss one fundamental feature: it is cheap because it is subsidized by ads. Unremovable Fandango promotions. Rotating adverts for subscription channels, TV events, political shows...all sit next to your apps/input selection menu.
I use it for PS4 Pro and Netflix/Hulu/HBO Go.
Great TV...really nice tech.
But I hate the ads.

You bought a shield for every tv?

Think I saw that thing for less than 500 bucks this past weekend. (65")

Neither do I. I did what was mentioned in this thread already. Connect to the internet for the updates then take it off the network and only use PS4 / FireTV for everything. No ads

Depending on your home network setup, you could block all of the TV’s outgoing traffic on your firewall. I recently did this for my setup but I haven’t registered any hits yet.

Plug the TV into Ethernet when you first set it up. After it is set up, unplug the ethernet. Never give it your wifi password. Plug in Apple TV, Fire TV, or whatever box that you use that doesn't track. Profit.

TCL 5 series 65" roughly $500
TCL 6 series 65" $719
everyone says 5 series is shite and pay $200 more for 6
i'm still debating going to 70" on the 6 series.

i already get bullshite on my regular roku so using that right screen space for shite i already ignore doesn't seem too bad

really?
i only have experience with chromecast and fireTVs but was interestied in trying out Roku since everyone seems to like them but that sucks to have that crap on screen all the time. i just want a generic android box i can run apps on.
i didn't know roku showed ads like that.
