But why?

If your not a software developer, it's complete junk. If you are just buy a Mac or use WSL.

If it weren't for my kids playing computer games, I'd be back to 100% on Linux. It is just better at everything except the availability of games.

I mean it's your preference, and that's fine. But everything?

The hw support is arse
The software support is arse
There's serious security concerns for someone who doesn't know what they are doing(heartbleed anyone??)

I think everything is a stretch.

Brother, it's time for you to leave the chat due to your stupidity.

No other OS is in the same league as Linux as far as hardware support. It's not even close. Linux has lapped the field multiple times.

Software support is far from arse. If you have a need for some Windows- or Mac-specific software, then your view might be biased. There are Linux alternatives for just about everything.

Any major Linux distro is likely far more secure than Windows out of the box. Macs also have their problems. Any non-trivial software is going to have flaws, but to pick out Linux as the OS with the most serious security concerns is laughable.

I didn't say that.

Steam and Lutris. Do it.

I played d4 at launch. Playing cyberpunk 2077 now.

Gaming on Linux is miles ahead of just 2 years ago

Steam and Lutris

My kids use Steam on Windows but when I looked into using it on Linux, it appeared to require a windows emulator (wine most likely). I never had luck with anything running well in a windows emulator but I havent messed with one for probably 15 years. Plus, I doubt my hardware is good enough to handle software mode for graphics. I need good, quality hardware acceleration for the games.

It is using WINE under the hood, but in my experience the difference in performance is negligible.
Valve has helped make huge strides in Linux drivers and emulation because of the steam deck. They made their own compatibility layer called Proton. Hardware acceleration works.

Seriously, you just use steam and download the game(s) and most run with zero tweaking.

What the frick is your point? You made a list of reasons why Linux sucks compared to the alternatives, but your list was essentially all positives for Linux. Heartbleed was a non-issue for desktop Linux.

I cant stop laughing about the hardware support, especially since he keeps bringing up MacOS, which has the absolute worst hardware support

Like every tech company in the world uses Mac's almost exclusively. Even microsoft people use mac's lol.

Junk though right, not good for anything.

Most multiplayer games that have an anti-cheat client will not run on WINE. Unfortunately, if you are a primary FPS player you're stuck with Windows (like myself)

What does that have to do with hardware support?

If that is your argument, they all run their most prized and financially critical systems (network management and data center servers) on Linux. That is probably more a testament than using macs for office work.

I mean, it's a closed system, their hardware support is 100%.

100% agree, i do the same.

Agree, mainly development, mainly due to the spread of kube. Which is why i started off the thread, saying this:

Because I can? Because I like to learn new things?

I have Windows and Mac machines in the house, and they are fine. I've dabbled in Linux in the past and want to use it more and learn. It costs nothing, what could be the downside?

Variety is the spice of life.
