Anyone have experience with the LED light strips on Amazon? I am looking to switch out some fluorescent lights I had in a trough running along the length of my living room about 7ft high that reflect onto the ceiling. I am looking for something that could change colors and can dim and could be controlled through either an app or Alexa. I am going to be using Z wave switches connected to most likely a Smart Things hub.

The ones Amazon sell work great. You are just going to need to buy a Zwave RGB controller.

bought one of the 16.3ft sections.. was surprised by the quality of the tape itself, as well as the switches/connections/etc. that came with them.

however, the tape was grouped into sections of lights (so you could cut it), and one section was already either out or on its way there

Also, even the warmest temperature ones I could find (2700k), were still more bluish than yellowish

my brother bought us a couple and they just have a shitty little remote that came with them.

would the zwave controller actually control colors as well or just turn it on and off?

I use the philips hue. You can connect the strips together up to 36'.

Don't cheap out on them. I had a set of EBay RGB LED strips mounted under my cabinets, and they burned my apt down

It's not cheap, well at CAD standards

Fibaro

As far as the strips im not sure the exact ones on Amazon. My company sells a brand that cost more and is nothing but problems so I tell my guys to just buy the ones on Amazon. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

Go to home depot and get 16' of LED tape. They are connectable and can be cut down to size(every 4th LED). They are full RGB and come with a remote and power supply. As far as IoT, I'm not sure but they are in the same section with all of the other IoT items and connections. They're about $59.99. I have a set for my PC setup and so far so good

ETA: I do not own any IoT items.

One thing to watch for is how it produces the "white" light. Most RGB strips only have RGB LEDS and they create the white light by illuminating all 3 colors at max. It may be fine since it is reflecting up on the ceiling (I'm assuming it's in a valence of some sort that hides the lights) but it may not be the white you want. I bought some for under my cabinets and my counters are somewhat reflective so I would be able to see each different color LEDS and didn't like that. Traded them in for pure white strips.

I bought some and did cabinet lighting for my kitchen for a fraction of the price of pre packaged units.

I used these light strips

and this dimmable transformer

Also i didn't put them directly on the bottom of the cabinets, I actually put them on thing strips of wood and velcoro'd the wood to the bottom of the cabinets to its easy to take down and repair if needed.

How do you power them though? This is my main concern for under the cabinet led lights. Outlets are not available.

you don't have a single electrical box on the back wall under the cabinets?

Yes but you would see the power cord dangling. They're a foot or so below the bottom of the cabinets and not hidden by the cabinets.

It would look tacky imo.

no plug. you need tap into the power in that box, hardwire, and run behind the wall and then run the wire through right at the base of the cabinet.

Damn. I guess i could look into that but that seems like a lot of work for under the cabinet led lights. I was just hoping they came with battery powered options.

Define battery powered?

So you would change your battery for your LED lights every few days?

You can buy ones with a plug, but like you said, it looks ghetto AF

If it required changing every few days then no i would just not bother installing the lights. If it was every couple of months then yes I'd be fine with that.

You would need a pretty large battery for that

I hadnt done any research on it so i wasn't aware if there was anything on the market. For my purposes then I'm not sure LED under the cabinet lights are important enough to me for the amount of work it sounds like is required.
