Wife is going back to school and she needs a laptop for those purposes. Trying to keep it around the $800 range. Can anyone lead me in which direction to go?

Check the website for the college she will be in where she is going to school. They will usually have minimum recs for purchasing a computer.

What is she going to school for? That may determine the requirements

Does she need Windows or MacOS? Does she prefer Apple or Windows? Heck, even an iPad Pro might be a great solution if a digital notepad is more of a requirement.

Find out what software she will be using. That will guide you the OS.

Some manufacturers offer student discounts on computer purchases; worth the inquiry.

Nurse practitioner

Back 12 years ago when I was in school, we had a camera we had to plug in and scan our fingerprint for tests. Don’t know the procedure now for this, but maybe make sure there are plenty of usb drives.

If that isn’t an issue, any basic entry laptop will get the job done for papers and online discussion boards.

From what I gather today, it cannot be a MacBook or have a touchscreen.

I've had a MacBook pro, MacBook air and well spec'd Dell XPS.

The dell is trash compared to the MacBooks. Build quality, reliability, etc

eBay or FB marketplace a Dell Latitude 5570-80-90 for ~$150, upgrade to a 512gb SSD and RAM to at least 8gb. A fine puter for <$300

Heck, you might find it with those upgrades/specs for that initial $150.
