Curious to see how this thing compares to my Ring.

Ships in March and costs $229. Right now they are throwing in a Google Home mini for free ($49 value) so I am anxious to compare that to my Echo Dots that I have.

Definitely will follow this. Whenever my wife and I relocate to a more permanent home once our careers level out, definitely interesting in having a smart home.

Do you have the Nest secure, or any plans to buy one?

I've got two interior camera, two smoke detectors and the thermostat. I know their stuff brings a higher premium, but I'm wondering if I shouldnt just stay in their ecosystem.

I have cameras and thermostats and I'm going to get the secure as soon as im done remodeling my house in a month. I'm completely sold on the easy of the ecosystem. I'll pay for convenience all day long.

What are the theoretical advantages to Ring?

No. I have a hard wired security system. I really don’t trust the wireless systems. They seem to be prone to being jammed. Maybe I am just being paranoid though.

The only Nest products I currently have are the carbon monoxide detectors.

The biggest advantage to me is that you can appear to be home, even though you are not.

I have been able to communicate several times to the person at my door, even though while at work. Very handy!

I didn’t sign up for the cloud service because I have my own camera system with a custom DVR I built myself. If I need video, I go to that.

Sorry for confusion, I meant what are the theoretical advantages to Nest vs. Ring

Eta: hit submit too soon

I love my Ring too but I attempted to add a second Ring and all hell broke loose. The doorbell would ring at all hours of the day on its own and the video feeds on the second ring crapped out.

Once I removed the second Ring, order was restored.

I love to test new technology and compare to what I already have.

It is an expensive hobby!

Ring also comes with a chime that can plug into any outlet in the house and alert you when the ring is pressed.

Does nest have a chime accessory?

I don't have any of the outdoor cameras yet, so I picked one up.

I spent way too much money yesterday

Thought I did find some of the alarm systems on eBay for under $400. Not sure if they are legit or not, but I'll give it a shot to save $150.

If you buy the secure from nest.com you can add an outdoor camera for only $100 bucks at checkout.

eta: actually at Best Buy right now you can get the secure kit with an outdoor video camera for $500, no camera for $400

I've been torn on all of this for a few months. I have a nest thermostat and nest cam currently. I want to upgrade to at least three or four more cameras. Nest would cost me approx. $1300-$1400 for that. I can get four Arlo Pro 2 cameras for $799.

Normally I'm against this type of thing but this is actually smart by the city.

They pay a one time fee for the cameras and don't have to pay for the maintenance, internet connection or the cloud storage. All I have to do is give them the video if there is a crime committed in the area

I didnt think the cameras kept the video feed unless you subscribed to Nest's service. Thats how it seems to work with the cameras I have inside.

You have to subscribe to Nest Aware. It's around $10/month I believe.
