My AV stuff is in a closet, so if IR is needed for a device without IP control there would need to be a hub with IR.

Do you have Ethernet or hdmi between the two?
A spare Ethernet, grab a BAFX IR over ethernet + distribution box. Works great. You won’t be able to use this cable for network (unless you know how to settle for 2-pair Ethernet and split it and are willing to do that, but that’s probably the wrong move)
HDMI- there are IR over HDMI adapters that work fairly well.

You can find a used GlobalCache device and do some scene control with it, but it will be a lot of headache, and there is no physical remote for any of their products which is annoying. They do work great, though.

if you are just useing a streaming box, you do not need a full harmony setup... but if you are running an AV receiver, with say a Shield, PS5, RPi emulator, XBox. you need something to control the receiver.

Yup. I’m considering just eliminating everything and just using Apple TV. 98% of the time that what I’m using anyway.

I have Savant now for my control, just a nicer C4 imo. But it’s over kill for me. I just changed out my AVR and was only using the Apple TV remote for awhile until I update my Savant system. I did like the minimalist approach, but was lacking in depth control. Like if I want to switch audio modes etc.

I think HDMI-ARC killed it

It's arc/e-arc along with cec implementation and the proliferation of streaming.

Most people don't need a smart remote anymore, so major companies won't invest in the technology. It will just be something niche and likely expensive for high end systems with numerous components.
