Microsoft is basically arguing that it can't break through with Bing because Google has 90% market dominance usage through the iPhone with their Apple deal, and that helps them constantly make Google better.

"You get up in the morning, you brush your teeth, and you search on Google," said Nadella. "With that level of habit forming, the only way to change is by changing defaults." Nadella went on to say that Google is able to use its ~90 percent market share to improve search results, further reinforcing its monopoly. He said that it's "bogus" that there is choice in the search engine market.

As a consumer I care because monopolies like this help reduce necessary competition. With that said...boo fricking hoo Microsoft.

Cry me a fricking river Microsoft. You had 95% of the desktop market and used that leverage to make IE the top browser in the world. Then Firefox and Google took that crown from you by writing better software. Be better.

The new BING search engine is far better than Google, based on what I looked up.

Google pays for access, because your search history is worth more in identifying you than anything else.
Set your defaults to DuckDuckGo.com.

Wasn't it actually Netscape that dethroned IE by suing Microsoft? And then it turned out Netscape sucked.
Maybe I'm wrong those years are blurry.

IE dethroned Netscape by being bundled with Windows. AOL bought Netscape and they sued Microsoft. The justice department also sued Microsoft. None of that made a bit of difference.
Just before being acquired by AOL, Netscape open sourced their code and that became Firefox. Firefox put a dent in Microsoft's market share. Then Apple and Google forked the open source browser Konquerer/KHTML from the KDE project and those became Safari and Chrome. Chrome obviously dominated.
