In ceiling speaker questions

My house came with these in multiple rooms. I am guessing they are over 20 years old. We really only use the kitchen ones and play them generally at the same time as our 4 patio speakers, as those are the only two rooms where we listen to music. I am curious about changing the ones in the kitchen to something newer. Questions:
Are these replaced from within the room or must one go into the attic to do it?
How difficult is this?
Any recommendations as far as brand/model?

I'd just pretend they're not there. The control techniques for individual rooms through an amp was never wife friendly, not matter what brand I used up through about 2016. Just dropped Sonos (now I use Denon) smart speakers where I needed them.

It's just that I control the music way more than she does and we are both somewhat used to just telling our various machine to "Play music on____________ speaker" and it just working. I also cast from my Youtube music app to my Wiim almost every day.

We have no idea

This century, we still use ancient ceiling audio tech. Check if the speakers are DVC. AMPs are super cheap used but $1000+ new. Pretty easy to hack together a cool system but even Echo premium or studio has better mono/room sound than a universal ceiling setup.

Looking to get rid of any Sonos stuff?

I was just considering this same question. Also, I have vaulted ceilings. How do get rid of the ugly arse recessed light eyeballs that allow the floods to light the room? Godz I hate those. I just want to take them all out, install custom ceiling mouldings with ambient lighting from behind them, but wtf do you do when the power supply blows or the LED strip stops working?

I have Sonos in 2 rooms inside and 2 areas outside. I like it a lot.
I find room control easy and seamless on the app. The wife easily can control music and rooms as well.
I like how I can have different music playing in different areas. My previous house has all of the speakers going to a receiver and I could control the rooms but every room had to have the same music.

My ex wife is letting most of it rot in her garage, otherwise I would accommodate you. I had seven or eight Sonos Ones, including ones I left outside 100% of the time with a $10 "sock" to keep them less dusty.
I think most people get connected to in ceiling speakers based on what was paid to install them. When you realize most of them cost under $75 (accounting for inflation) a pair, the math of dealing with a temperamental app/speaker switcher vs a $200 smart speaker loses it's luster.

I added two to my ceilings a few years ago. On mine, there were some tabs that had to be pushed out from the speaker that would allow them to "sit" on the drywall. I then had to go up into the attic to tighten them down a bit so that they would sit flush to the ceiling drywall. Otherwise, they wouldn't be flush. So, i would say attic access is necessary, but I can't speak for all speakers.

I found it relatively easy, but attic access isn't an issue at my home.

Not sure I can help you here. I would get something that is well reviewed as you wouldn't want to have to visit them again, if necessary. But, shite happens that goes for even the best quality.

I have both 6 and 8" Klipsch speakers in my house installed in ceiling in my living room, master, and back patio. I installed them all myself using wiring I had prerun by my GC when the house was built. Pricing on amazon was pretty good discount off retail, and I didn't find anything that would make me believe they were counterfeit which always concerns me with amazon.
Do they sound as good as towers? no
Do they sound way better than a soundbar and more wife friendly? yes
The ones I bought simply use a Phillips head screw to retract/deploy/tighten the brackets that hold them to the drywall. Super easy to do.

I cut holes in the ceiling and installed 12 8 inch and 3 6.5 DVC speakers in my house, and 4 outside. 24 channel amp can put 2 more if I need them.
Amp/Controller/speakers I got from Home Theater Direct out of TX. Very good support.
Attic looks like Shelob's lair from LOTR. :)
Speakers will likely come out with some locking tabs/screws from below. you should only need to go in attic if you need to pull wire.
