Not even Apple can protect you from downloading a program that you authorize to execute.

And not even Microsoft can protect you from downloading and executing a program, either, which is how the vast majority of Windows malware gets installed.

You realize iPhone jailbreaks used to be as easy as visiting a website, right? Let me rephrase that: iPhone security was circumvented completely simply by visiting a web page.

Believe it or not, even Apple makes mistakes. The sooner you get that through your thick skull the better off you'll be.

Let me know how many malware attacks there've been on iPhone (iOS) or Apple OS X.

Then let me know how many on Android, much less Windows.

I'll hang up and listen...

No, we just need a few, select posters to stop rolling in on their Big Wheels acting like 6 year olds any time someone starts an Apple related thread.

Once again, how do you protect against a program you intentionally download and authorize to run on your computer?
Perhaps you haven't heard, but there are programs available which tout the ability to protect computers from malware. They do this by scanning programs before they execute, after the user has tried to run them. If this always-on protection is too intrusive or resource-heavy, some allow you to manually scan a shady file before you execute it yourself.

Really, the only way that malware spreads these days is via ignorance or carelessness. All it takes is a little bit of caution to prevent it. You should start advocating caution to Mac users rather than spouting overconfidence in how secure they are. Otherwise, in a couple years you just might look back on your post history and realize what a fool you've been.

LOL. I been getting that B.S. line for almost 10 years now.

I'm still waiting.

I don't waste processor cycles on malware protection and I personally don't know any Mac user that does.

If we're so vulnerable to attack you'd think the internet would be filled with reports of hackers reeking havoc on clueless Apple users.

ETA: I just came in the thread to clarify how she got the malware in the first place. I'm the one that got pilled on.

And the reality is I'm right. All I get is "but watch out you Dolt..cause maybe SOME day."

Yeah I been hearing that for a decade now.

Same here. I've been using OS X for several years and I've never used any antivirus software. I've never gotten adware, malware or any virus. Not once.

In May 2013, a malicious installer, distributed by Genieo partner Softonic,[1] was found by security software company Intego. The installer masquerades as a necessary update to Adobe Flash Player and attempts to install Genieo.app without user interaction. Dynamic libraries are added to the Safari browser, which intercept searches intended for Bing and Google.[2]

Other versions of Genieo for Mac have also been offered as 'codecs' required for video playback.[3] Testing carried out on Genieo for Mac in June 2013 found that it left active software behind, after using the supplied uninstaller, which required detailed manual removal

Top 4 Worst Computer Viruses

2. OSX/RSPlug Trojan

The RSPlug Trojan is like a DNSChanger ( a DNS hijacking Trojan, it is estimated that it infected more than 4 million computers ). OSX/RSPlug Trojan was first terse on 30 October 2007 by “Intego” ( a Mac security software company. They create, data protection software, firewall, anti-spam, backup and antivirus for Mac OS X since 1997)

This harmful virus was created targeting the Mac OS X. Primarily, and OSX/RSPlug Trojan was found on game downloads sites. After installing OSX.RSPlug, the DNS settings, were automatically altered to redirect web browsing publishing sensitive things like publishing adds to other websites. However, the lunch of OSX/RSPlug Trojanreflects that Apple’s platform is not safe from hackers in the future.

keep telling yourself you're immune.

good strategy, would use again.

All that means is that after all that time, there still aren't enough Mac users for malware makers to give a shite about. How many threads about Mac security issues do you need to see on TD before you get your head out of your arse? I'll start counting.

"Waste", huh? Care to guess how many cycles are already "wasted" by Apple's code that attempts to secure the system?

Is the internet "filled" with reports of hackers wreaking havoc on Windows machines? What is your threshold for the internet being filled? A googling for "mac virus" returns almost half as many results as for "windows virus", yet Windows machines outnumber Macs 10 to 1.

At least you got the clueless part right, assuming you represent a typical Mac user. You really have no idea what's coming once Macs reach critical mass.

Well it;s been over a year now. Haven't heard a peep about it.

If it was a major issue it'd be all over the internet.

And once again, from your description of it it sounds like something you have to authorize to install. It "attempts " to install w/o user interaction. Meaning I take it that it can't.

She got the malware the same way 99% of Windows users get malware. Your clarification wasn't necessary.

While CAD and I have different methods, I think our goal is the same: to inform Mac users that they aren't as safe as they think. That false sense of security is going to bite a lot of people in the arse.

Is it not enough that Apple themselves stopped their "no malware" ad campaign? Apparently not, as that belief seems to be alive and well. OP's wife thought she was invulnerable, and now we have a thread about the trouble she got into. And people are still in here spouting shite about how safe they are.

It just blows my fricking mind.

If you equate a 4 page thread out of one of tens of thousands of specific threads to "all over the internet" as a major issue, I can't help you.

oh for fricks sake. how about 382,000 search results of people trying to remove it.
