Kid gets new iPhone. Carplay doesn't work in his Civic which had worked perfectly with his old phone. We go through all sorts of trouble shooting, rebooting, forgetting devices etc. His phone works perfectly in the other vehicles at the house. Finally, I try a different cable, and the message we had been getting goes away. The only difference appears to be how tight the USB-A cable fits in the vehicle port. Anyone experience this? Do I just keep buying more cables? Can the port in a Honda be replaced easily?

Buy more cables. USB ports can be replaced, but it’s likely going to require a dash tear down to do it.

Get him a wireless car play adapter so he doesn't have to keep plugging it in

I like that idea, but it plugs into that same port, right?

It does, but they're almost cheaper than lightning cables (I think I paid $26 for mine in May) I thought of suggesting that, but he's probably plugging his phone in for charging as much as he is for CarPlay, I'm guessing.

It seems like all of the wireless CarPlay boxes are borderline POS. Mine constantly won't connect when I get in the car, and defaults to AM?? radio until I manually start CarPlay. For some reason, it also keeps my phone connected to CarPlay if the doors aren't locked (which they're not while in my garage), which means I manually have to turn Wifi back on via the Control Center when I get home. It's sad that this is the state of things in a brand new way too expensive car in 2024.

Yeah, I’d avoid the fake wireless CarPlay things and just go with great cables.

I buy Anker cables when they're on sale, and Cables to Go. I always buy distinctive colors like red or blue so no one thinks it's "their" cable, ever.

OP, it's a bit of a ghetto fix, but you may be able to create a tiny shim out of a piece of paper maybe folded twice to keep the USB port from wiggling behind the dash.

Have yet to find a dependable wireless adapter at this time. Hopefully this year will be the breakthrough!

Make sure lightening cable is a sync cable and not a generic charge cable. CarPlay is picky and generally needs all wires. Many cables won’t work right out of the box. Avoid adapters also.

We tested that by immediately going to a different car. It worked. Appears to be related to how loosely that cable fit in the car input.

I have a 2018 Chevy that was wired only Android Auto. I got a wireless adaptor with good reviews from Amazon and I really can't believe how well it works. Just get in the car and the Android Auto pops up every time.
