Renovating and adding onto an existing home. Trying to get a handle on all of this automation stuff. Ideally, looking for a setup that would allow for:

1. A monitored alarm with door and window sensors (Don't really need motion detectors because we have dogs and set the alarm to "stay" when we leave anyway). This should be able to be turned on/off by a mobile device.

2. One security camera at the front door, one at the back door, and possibly one inside the home. These outdoor cameras should send notifications to mobile devices upon motion, and record only during movement. Being able to record at night would be plus.

3. Locks that can be locked/unlocked via mobile device (Schlage)

4. Outdoor and some indoor lighting that can be controlled via mobile device

5. Thermostat that can be controlled via mobile device.

I've done some research, but am still unsure. I think I'd need something like a lutron Caseta or wink to serve as a hub for door locks, lighting and thermostat. Then a security company for monitoring that offers a mobile option, then something like a few blink cameras, or other ip type cameras.

This leads me to believe I would need 3 different systems for all of these things. Is this accurate? Is there just one ecosystem that can do all of these things? Are there cameras that integrate with lutron or wink and provide mobile viewing/notifications?

Looking to stay under $1,500 for all of these things, and am fairly handy. Expanding one at a time would be a plus as well.

Do you currently have an alarm? Here are the items I currently have:

1. Honeywell vista 20p with envisilink add-on. Uses a mobile website to control alarm, and also supports IP cameras and a branded wifi thermostat.

2. Foscam IP cameras. There are many IP cam apps available

3. Schlage lock controlled by wink app

4. MyQ light switches controlled by MyQ app. Also controls my garage door.

5. Used to have a honeywell wifi thermostat until I upgraded ac unit that came with it's own wifi thermostat.

Since you say you are fairly handy, I would recommend installing the security system yourself. You can get monitoring a lot cheaper if you aren't getting a "free alarm system" with it.

I am following this one as I am interested in doing the same. Right now I'm using Vivint to do all of these things for $70 a month but I believe there should be a better, cheaper way.

Thanks, CFBM. I know there's a lot out there. Just wondering if it's best to get the best accessory for each function, or if there was one hub that could do everything. Going to be tough to explain to the wife that she needs 5 different apps to control everything.

It's not as bad as it sounds. I have a folder on my phone with all of my apps. It's not many more steps to tap the folder, then pick the app I need compared to opening the wink app and navigate to the function I need. I do wish the wink hub would control the MyQ light switch. It will control the garage door though.

Not if you layer a control system like Crestron on top of the system. Then everything is controlled by the Crestron app.

Your budget is your limiting factor here. Control systems that can tie all of the peripherals together are well outside of your stated budget.

Thanks. Not building a million dollar home or anything, so I guess I'll just deal with multiple apps.

WINK has radios for just about everything you want. have you seen my wink thread on here? we've covered many of the things you're asking.

wink controls kidde fire alarms, nest & honeywell thermostats (and others), chamerblain garage doors, schlage locks, lutron devices, leviton devices, GE devices, zwave, zigbee, bluetooth, etc.

with one app you can set up shortcuts & robots to do all kinds of cool things.

the only thing wink doesnt do is work with Foscam cameras but thats not a huge deal. wink hub was practically free (99 cents before christmas) and the app is free and can control your honeywell thermostats and chamberlain garage doors without buying a hub.

i'm not paying a monthly fee to any SOB and the foscam for $60ish is HD, infrared, fully controllable remotely and if you take 5 minutes you can get it emailling you jpgs when it goes off or recording to a local hard drive at your house.

So the Wink now supports the Nest thermostat? Thought I read somewhere that it did not, although it would support dropcam.

Does the Wink control WeMo devices?

Another alternative is buying the new Logitech hub coupled with the "Extender". This will control everything from your TV to your Z-Wave outlets/light switches.

This

Also you might want to consider going with RadioRa2 over Caseta if you are doing a whole house. Caseta is limited and only compatible with Caseta.
