My AV guy is telling me he can’t find a zone 2 powered stereo receiver anywhere. Basically, I have a set speakers inside and 1 pair outside so I need 2 zone receiver. I was thinking about just going Sonos and adding a speaker selector. Can someone help out on what I should do? This guy is helpless

speaker selector

I am using a plain Jane receiver and I run anywhere from 2 to 8 speakers(patio/kitchen/den/bedroom) using a selector. I never want different sources, so this works for me.

It’s been near impossible to find AVRs in the CI channel.

That’s not giving you two zones. Do you want them to play different things ?

You can do that with one amp but you will have to manually turn on the outside speakers. I would also recommend a volume control for outside.

I don’t really understand what you’re saying, sorry. Can you recommend what you think I should do? As in, what I should purchase and what it would allow me to do?

With one amp both inside and outside will play the same thing at the same volume. You will need a way to control the outside speakers so they are not always on at the same volume as inside. To do this you will need a speakers selector and/or a volume control. You won’t t be able to control the selection of these speakers or volume level (to a certain degree) on an app, you will have to manually selected this by physically touching them.

Now you can overcome this with two amps. You can add the ability to play two different things at any volume and control everything from an app.

Thanks for this. So do you think I should go with 1 Sonos amp then add a speaker selector that has volume control?

Virtually any AVR $400 and up will have at least two powered zones. You should be able to change the speaker settings to have things play inside, outside, or both.

Am I missing something? Would any of these work? Stereo receivers with A/B speaker sets.

Gotcha. So you want to be able to play 2 different things in 2 different places. Or the same thing in both places. I'm bored. Lemme look.

What the hell is going on with inventory? You're right about stock.

No idea what your budget is. But these are "cheapest" I could find that were in stock. Some of these are refurbished.

That’s why I’m thinking I may go with Sonos. Thoughts? Also, what speaker selector do I need with volume? 4 channel? Thanks for your help on this, gents!

COVID supply chain issues plus Onkyo/ Pioneer temporarily exited the North American AVR market. They will come back but be sold through Klipsch. LINK

I’ve been in the market for a basic 5.2 or 2 channel system with a network connection to run 4 speakers in an outdoor system at the camp and the pickings have been slim for anything with a network connection that isn’t $500 plus (don’t need that for this application). My previous Onkyo receiver used there recently bit the dust

Sonos Connect:AMP for outside. Sonos Connect for inside and connect it to current receiver (or just do 2 connect AMPs..one for inside and one for outside). Done. Two zones, different things on each, fully controlled from phone including volume. Sonos is awesome (until they kill off your older products)

That seems unnecessary, right? $1300 for amps seems like a lot of $ to just play music for what I want to do. I may just try to Sonos amp with a 4 channel speaker selector.
