Have you video editors out there ever heard of the program Davinci Resolve?

I'm sure a number of you use either Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro X, however those programs can run you a pretty penny once you add up the monthly fees. Why not switch to Davinci Resolve, a professional grade editing software, and not pay a dime for it? I have been using the software for about a year and some change now and can't tell you enough how powerful and easy to use it is. There are two versions of it: a free version and a studio version. The free version has almost all of the features the studio version has. If you are more of a hobbyist who makes YouTube videos like me, you probably would never use the studio version and so you get a non-linear editing software that is just as powerful as Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro X for free. The studio version, however, is a one-time fee of $300 and thus - at the end of the day - far cheaper than the aforementioned Adobe and Final Cut Pro.

Black Magic Design makes the software and they've just released the latest version of the program, Davinci Resolve 17, though it's still in beta. Also...if you decide to purchase the studio version of Davinci Resolve 16 while you wait for 17 to go into full release, you get a free upgrade to 17.

I tried to get to know it, but just can't get used to using it. I guess it's too POWERFUL. I use a program called shotcut. It's free and more intuitive for me to use. No idea why I feel more at home using shotcut than resolve, but I do.

Davinci Resolve is great, but to clarify a misstatement you made, FCP X does not charge for updates, if you have purchased it at anytime, you get all the updates and improvements. That said FCP and Resolve excel in very different areas, and have fairly different workflows. Also you need to have a Mac for FCP. I’ve heard that the color grading in resolve is state of the art.

It is as that was Black Magic Design's specialty for the program when they first made it. I'm told the vast majority of Hollywood colorists use Davinci Resolve for its advanced color grading tools.

I just watched a bunch of youtube videos on how to use it. It took awhile but its pretty easy to use once you get over the fairly steep learning curve.

Of course i barely put it to the test, just use it to touch up family pictures and create little short home videos.

It requires a lot of processing power though.
