Why on earth doesn't apple just ditch the lightning cable in their phones already and go to straight usb-c?

If you're on T-Mobile this might be a deal breaker
quote:
Apple announced the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus today. They’re all great phones in many ways, but they have one fatal flaw for T-Mobile and its customers: No support for T-Mobile’s new LTE network.
quote:
Compatibility with 600MHz will become a big deal for T-Mobile customers, assuming you like actually using your phone when you’re out and about. Lower frequencies travel further and penetrate buildings better, which all adds up to superior coverage, especially inside buildings or in rural areas. Verizon has relied heavily on its 700MHz spectrum for years, and it’s a big part of the reason it keeps winning coverage awards. T-Mobile’s 600MHz network promises to be just as good or better, but you can only take advantage of it if your phone is compatible. 600MHz compatibility is only going to get more important as time goes on. T-Mobile is planning on having 600MHz coverage over 1,000,000 square miles by the end of this year, and by the end of 2018, it will play a big part in its national coverage — unless you have an iPhone X.

Which is why I was surprised when they decided to use Qi instead of being smug and using their own proprietary standard.

they wanted to say "existing wireless charging pads already in place all over the world".
cant believe it took 8 iphone models until they adopted qi. most android devices adopted it, went 'meh', and moved back to regular charging methods on their newer models.
my nexus 6 has it and i have a clock radio with a qi charger on top but i rarely use it because my usb charges it to like 80% in 15 minutes and the damn qi charger takes all night.

This is overblown. T-Mobile will have to move a lot of TV stations before they can even launch LTE on that band. Most markets won't even have Band 71 whenever the iPhone 9 is released.

Is this really even a big deal now? Just carry a cable that is both, they make them and they work fine. You don’t get reversible connections, but you still can use usb-c or lightning from the same cable.

You think wireless charging was around in 2006?

quit knighting for apple. you know what i mean..android devices adopted qi 3-4 phone models ago and have already moved beyond it as most new devices no longer seem to support it.

Uh...
i'm missing your point here

Qi has been around since 2008, so I would call it 8-9 new iPhones have been released in the meantime.

Cables are basically pure profit, plus they collect licensing fees on third party Lightning cables and accessories. The real sin for the new iPhones is raising the price and building in wireless and fast charging, yet providing no accessories in the box to take advantage of them.

My point is that there's no reason to exaggerate. Apple could have implemented the capability a few years ago and that would have aligned with most other OEMs. So 3 models late. And let's not pretend Qi is compatible with some huge range of phones. Here's all of them currently:
Samsung Galaxy: S7, S7 Edge, Note 5, S6, S6 Edge
Microsoft Lumia: 1520, 1020, 930, 929, 928, 920
Google Nexus: 4, 5, 6, 7 (2013)
BlackBerry: Priv
Nexus and Microsoft were first in 2012. Samsung in 2015.

you're cracking me up.
the statement "it took apple until version 8 of the iphone to implement qi charging" is 100% factual.
why is it so important for you to defend apple?
eta and to answer your other question, i use android 'sleep' and it doesn't work well if the phone is charging on the qi charger. the phone needs to be closer to me.

quote:That's a little different than "it took apple 8 models..." as if they could have done it those first few. That's like saying "it took samsung 30 models to implement qi charging".
it took apple until version 8 of the iphone to implement qi charging
quote:Why are you creating a fallacy just so you can use an insult? It's not important for me to "defend" them. Like I said, it's a valid criticism to say they're late to the game. I don't know why it's important for you to use hyperbole.

quote:Apple has put out at least one new model every single year. Who cares how they number/letter them? What models are you not counting? And why does Apple hold huge events for the "fake" models?

Since 2008, there have been no fewer than 9 new iPhone models.
quote:No reason to understate, either.
My point is that there's no reason to exaggerate.

Nexus and Microsoft were first in 2012.
And you say they are "a few years" late so nonchalantly. That's an eternity in the industry.
Posted on 9/13/17 at 2:42 pm to ell_13
fine, how about "it took until Q4 2017 for apple to release any product featuring wireless charging even though the technology has been around for a decade"
better?
better?

You forgot phones by:
Sony
Panasonic
Motorola
LG
Kyocera
HTC
Asus
Vertu
All of those companies have released phones with Qi charging.

quote:If qi started in 2008, then it's logical to use the model that was starting production in 2008. That's pretty straight forward. I even gave you a couple years. The first phone was released in 2012 that could use it: iphone 5. So there were 5 models that "could" have had it that didn't. Better?

No reason to understate, either.

quote:They're 2 years later than Samsung. I don't know what you mean by "nonchalantly" when all I'm trying to see is that it wasn't something apple missed from the very beginning which was implied by cad (who was using 8 because of iphone8).
