Google on Wednesday said it will stop selling ads based on a person's individual browsing across websites, a move that could shake up the digital advertising industry as consumers call for more privacy online. Last year, the search giant said it will phase out third-party cookies, little bits of code that can let advertisers track user history across the web. Once those are gone from Google's Chrome browser next year, the company made clear that it won't use or invest in alternative tracking tech that could identify people at an individual level.

The question everyone should be asking themselves is "why did they agree to stop their main revenue stream so easily?"

The answer to that of course is they have some other way to monetize users. And that should scare the shite out of you.

Your OS, screen resolution, browser, location all combine to give you a distinct fingerprint. They can identify you through that. They don't need cookies.

They're not going to stop selling ads. They're just not going to sell ads based on data that can be traced back to individuals. They're still going to sell ads and collect data, but the connection between the two will won't be traced back to an individual's collected data. That's what the article sounds like, anyway. Who knows how true that actually is or will be..

Yep.

Sounds like they know enough about you that they no longer need you to opt-in with your permission to target you.
