Current ISP Spectrum using their Technicolor modem/router| 100MBps

Just recently purchased the 3-pack of Google Wi-Fi. It was really between this and the Amplifi HD. I'm having tons of issues with dropped connections on smart home devices (primarily my LIFX bulbs). I expect better than my current Spectrum modem/router provides, but not BLAZING fast speeds. Will it simply provide a more reliable network with closer to what I'm paying for in terms of speed?

Amplifi HD really had their marketing at work with me making it seem like they get a STUPID amount of coverage with the fastest speeds of all mesh networks.

Who has Google Wi-Fi and do y'all like it? 4.5/5 out of nearly 3,000 reviews on Amazon.

I have it, and like it. Found a good deal on Amazon Treasure Truck so I made the jump. Honestly the best router is the one you never think about, and thats how google WiFi has been for me. I set it up, and haven't had to touch it since.

I'm curious as to how much you paid for it off the truck? I got the 3-pack on Amazon for $259. But it's good to hear that it's been good for you. I'm really hoping this can fix some of the issues I'm having with smart devices.

I've had Spectrum and Google Wifi for about a year now with little to no problems, also I'm getting the speeds I pay for in about every corner of our house.

$259 is a really good price, I paid $300.

Are your smart hubs hardwired into a router? You may want to switch your Google Wi-Fi into bridge mode and see if your connections are more stable..

I've got both Spectrum and Google WiFi (for about a year now). I also use an Arris Surfboard modem (just because I hated Cox modems).

Mine are fine. I just moved down the street and have not set up my smart bulbs yet, but previously they were were working with no issues (Hue and Sengled into smartthings).

I’ve got 3 of them in my house. No issues with coverage anywhere.

The only thing I can’t figure out is I have Fios Gigabit and I can be standing 6 inches away from the Google WiFi unit that is hardwired in to the router and can NOT pull down faster than 350mbps. If I hardwire in to the router, it comes in at 900mbps.

Does google WiFi not support gigabit speed?

Literally every bad comment I've read pertains to FiOS customers and their gigabit. No idea why.

Google WiFi does but your wireless nic in your device might not. For example, it might only be able to negotiate at 802.11n which has a max speed of 450Mbps vs 802.11ac which can do over 1Gbps

iPhone X? I would assume that supports gigabit.

Conversely, if I connect to the wireless network that’s coming out of the fios router vs the google WiFi, speeds improve (albeit not to 1gbps). However the coverage range drops which is why I got the google units.

The majority of (if not all) wifi technology can't support gigabit speeds.

Best I've seen from Google wifi connected to 1gbps service is around 500mbps. Too many variables with wifi to support speeds that fast.

Looooove my Google WiFi.

I have cable internet in a house that is 2800 square feet and 2 stories. Since I installed Google wifi in May, I have not had a single internet drop, I have not had to re-set my modem, and my wifi speeds are within 10mbps of my wired speed all over my house and in my front and back yard.

I've had it for a couple of months, and it has been flawless. Love that I can shut Wifi off in the app to my kids' devices every night so they're not up all night on them.

I have google wifi and I've only ever had one issue. The device lost its config due to an error on google's side once upon a time. I get great speeds everywhere in my house and my phone shows higher than 500down when I run speed tests on it (gigapower to the house)

You guys that have this, did y'all look into a ubiquity setup also? I have an older house and it's a long rectangle basically, and we'd like an AP for outdoor patio for tv/audio streaming. Wasn't sure if Google WiFi or a ubiquity wireless setup would be best.

I looked at the others, and watched several YouTube reviews of each one. The conclusion I came to is they are all about the same, so I went with the most cost effective, which was the Google at the time. I got the 3-pack for around $239. All the others were around $300.

I actually swapped a ubiquity setup out for the google. I only had the one endpoint but I constantly dropped connections and had much much slower speeds. Even when right next to it.

how limiting is this?

i have settings to allow me to use a free DDNS service, punch holes in my firewall for gaming and remote desktop access, setting a static IP for certain devices and being able to monitor monthly bandwidth usage on a per device basis, etc.

i dont want to give all that up for a new device that allows only a subset of what i can do with my good old asus/rmerlin firmware.

can anyone who uses advanced router features comment?

You can still do things like port forwarding, custom DNS, custom DHCP ranges, static ip reservations etc.
