Google is making yet another attempt at phone messaging

Stop us if you've heard this one before: Google is planning to make another mobile messaging push. A report by The Verge shows off its next effort, simply called Chat. What Chat isn't is yet another app; instead, it's a brand name for Universal Profile features in RCS, a standard meant to replace old-school SMS texting with iMessage-like features (minus end-to-end encryption, unfortunately) for everyone. Earlier this year Google said it had 43 carriers and device makes signed on to support RCS, while an updated list shows 55 carriers, 11 OEMS and two operating system distributors: Google and Microsoft (but not Apple, yet).
As a result, Chat's new features will live in the Android Messages app (and require some synchronization, perhaps with QR codes for access on non-phone devices) and use data instead of SMS on your phone plan. Similar to iMessage, users will simply use the Messages app to send a text, and if the person on the other end has support for RCS, they'll get the richer version of the message automatically, and if not, they'll get an SMS. You can get an idea of how it works and the features to expect from the MWC Americas demo shown above.
As for Allo, Google exec Anil Subharwal said the company is "pausing" work on that. This seems to cut out any future for that messaging app as its team moves over to Messages, although the Duo video chat service is continuing on and Hangouts will keep its focus on adding Slack-like enterprise features.

This one finally sounds like it might be what people have wanted. I just don't understand why they felt the need for widespread RCS support to make this happen.

Basically, without widespread RCS (or similar carrier tech) support, you're talking about yet another chat app, which Google has tried and tried without success. They could, of course, build a chat app with text fallback like iMessage, but the carriers apparently aren't very fond of that approach since it undermines their ability to sell services to businesses. And ultimately the carriers decide what apps are pre-installed on Android phones, so most of them would probably not allow Google to do something like iMessage. And with the RCS business messaging market expected to be valued at over $70billion by 2021, pushing carriers to support RCS is likely the path of least resistance for Google to fix Android messaging.

Gchat was awesome. They should have never touched it.

They changed it to hangouts. Changed some features and I quit using it as much.

Until it's supported by Verizon and AT&T it's hard for me to get excited.

i use it all the time. i still consider hangouts to be gchat

Yeah I don't really even recall any difference between gchat and hangouts anymore.

I've always liked Hangouts and wouldn't mind making it my dedicated app, but of course the issue is always not enough of my family/friends using it

I didnt understand any of this or how it works. Ha!
I dont use imessage. Just text people. I do use the BBM app some since it's supported on andriod and apple.
So whats the dumbdown difference between gchat-hangouts/RCS/imessage/bbm? Heck kik, whatsup, skype, etc
Other than different companies.

So my question is, if I'm a poor, and on a MVNO that uses Verizon towers, will I get rcs when Verizon switches it on?

widespread RCS support
This will probably be another one of those "widespread support overseas, but at&t and Verizon want you to be stuck in 1998, so they still haven't supported RCS" moment... Until at&t supports it in 2026 and Verizon rolls it out as a brand new feature in 2031
