Gaming Computer

Told my son I would upgrade his gaming computer if he got grades, little bastard made Junior National Honor Society. He has an old computer that he gets by with, had a buddy look at upgrading but it would pretty much mean starting from scratch. Is there a pre-built you would recommend that would be upgradeable for him in the future. Mainly used for Fortnite, Roblox, COD. He has a really good monitor, mouse and keyboard so willing to spend a bit more on just the computer.

How much are you willing to spend?

Was hoping to stay under 2k

If you are looking for a prebuilt, look at this Youtube channel. This guy reviews some of the popular prebuilt companies. Fyi, alot of them are bad value or badly put together but there are a couple who are decent:

Thanks, I was also looking at this one, seems popular on the review boards may be a bit much for what he plays though

I know you said he has a "really good monitor", but what is the resolution and max refresh rate?

It's definitely too much for the budget you proposed, but it's not too much PC for what he does.
Gaming PCs are like televisions. No one has ever said "Man! I wish I would have bought a smaller, lower resolution TV."

Agree, I don’t mind going a bit over budget…

But for those games specifically, and at that resolution, it would be spending a lot of money for diminishing returns.
I'm not saying don't get it, though, if your son truly deserves it and its within your family's budget, it'll be a hell if a nice system with a lot of room for growth. But a monitor upgrade might be on the horizon sooner than you think...

Build one with him and learn together

We thought about that as well, I am not very tech savvy but we could probably manage, but looking up the price and availability of theses components and making sure everything is compatible is a bit above my computer savvy and I am not sure we would save that much in the current climate.

We can help you spec the build. And part availability has gotten significantly better.
With the games he’s playing, at the resolution he’s playing them, he needs more cpu than he needs gpu, and that’s going to be difficult to find in gaming PCs. And my primary issue with the one you linked is that a 240 aio is a little undersized for that cpu, and 750w is a little lower than I would like on the psu.
Building custom would let you get around some of those issues. If you’re open to it, I (and I imagine others) can look at putting together a spec sheet tomorrow. Otherwise, we can look at some other prebuilts.

Sure I am open - and if we have to upgrade the monitor to get better graphics that would be an option as well, probably don’t need 4k but 1080p maybe 1440p (I have heard him mention that as well). He is 13 and games quite a bit with his friends, more on his current PC than PS5. His current PC is OEM so not really upgradeable from what I have found

For people who game competitively (and I use that term loosely), many of them stay at 1080p so they can achieve very high refresh rates. As for upgradability, you're in a bite of a tight spot right now. Both Intel and AMD are right at the cusp of moving into new chipsets and are shifting to DDR5 RAM. If you buy into either ecosystem right now, you would likely have to buy an entirely new motherboard later if you wanted to upgrade the cpu. I don't say that as a disincentive to your buying/building right now, but I did want to be clear on that, in case it impacted your price range.

+1 to everything Josh said
The nice thing about building custom PCs though is that even if you do have to upgrade motherboards, you can always throw the old one up for resale and recoup a chunk of your costs.
I think the good sweet spot these days is 1440p gaming at 100Hz+. Any faster refresh rate than 100Hz and I can't really tell anymore (and personally I play CS:GO "competitively," also using that term loosely). Any higher resolution and you'll have to pay a lot more or sacrifice smoothness.
That 3070Ti system should be able to hit that mark very well. But for a 1080p monitor I think it would be overkill, so you'd have wasted GPU power you're paying for now but couldn't use until down the line when you get a better monitor. But you could definitely jack up the graphics to ultra/max-tier on most games at 1080p like that.
Buying things unbalanced like this always creates vicious upgrade spirals for me

It's hard to avoid. I'm currently sitting here with a 3080, a 5800x, and 32gb of bdie running at 3800 14-14-14-28. Which is great, until I upgrade my gpu probably sometime late this year, and then things get out of whack again

That’s kind of what I thought looking up the different components on this system - agree 1080p is enough for him he has mentioned playing with a quicker refresh rate.

Definitely not competitively but he does play pretty often and his “clan” as he calls it are pretty good at least from what I can gather doing my research - want something capable now but also something he can upgrade down the line. You mentioned the cooler and power supply - in a pre built system like this is that something that can be upgraded or changed to be more in line with what the system needs?
