So I just completed a new computer build. Is there a widely used free virus protection that I should install or as long as I dont browse sketchy things should I be ok?

I think most do fine with the built-in Defender.

My default answer is Linux though.

At this point, Windows Defender is really, really good. There's nothing free that can beat it, in my opinion, and there are few paid programs that can, either. And even browsing sketchy things should still be fine. As long as you don't routinely download and install sketchy things, you likely won't run into issues. And frankly, if you do, paid programs aren't likely to save you, either.

And on a separate note, how did the build go? You kind of fell off the map after asking a few questions on the Gaming board

It actually went good. I was shocked it went off without a hiccup. Just followed a few YouTube videos step by step. Been playing D2 beta this weekend

Kaspersky, bit defender, avira, and AVG are good free options that are better than defender.

If you just want basic then use defender.

Which board did you end up buying? Don’t know if you ever saw my warning that the one you were looking at was missing one of the front panel connectors your case had.

Yeah I went with the asus strix B550. I wasn’t worried about the usb gen 2 header.

Don't install the virus (Windoze) and you will be okay... LOL

I agree with this. I'm a big supporter/promoter of Linux, and I recommend for a first time user to dual boot Linux and Windows. Seems to help with the transition.

Another option is to install Linux on a laptop and use that for a while.

I've been using Linux Mint for a while now, and it's to the point that I genuinely prefer it to using a Windows desktop.

I've been using Qubes OS on my personal build. It is the most secure operating system in the world.

I used Avast when I had Winblows.

I'm Linux now.
