What I found was that while Echo is currently more capable than Home, partly because a larger number of third-party companies have worked with Amazon to add capabilities to its speaker, Google’s product is poised to surpass Echo in the coming years.

Home’s link to Google’s database of information means it will most likely be able to give superior answers in the future. In addition, music played from Home sounds clearer and its virtual assistant is a better listener than Alexa. So for those deciding between the two products, I recommend waiting to see if Home expands its abilities before making a purchase.

TO get an idea of how annoying it can be to say “O.K., Google” multiple times a day, try replacing the word Google with another brand.

O.K., Pepsi. O.K., Chipotle. O.K., Skittles. You get the picture. It’s difficult to utter “O.K., Google,” the phrase used to control Google’s new Home smart speaker, without sounding like a marketing tool.

CE Pro just had a similar article. Google will be the more powerful product.

It would be nice if they would go ahead and ship my home. Considering I pre-ordered within 2 minutes of it going on sale.

they should let you set your own wake phrase.

like, "rubber baby buggy bumpers"

I'd think you will be able to. You can change Alexa in the app and using the autovoice plugin for tasker on my phone allows me to change Ok google to whatever I want.

Jarvis, computer and Hal are some popular custom triggers.

I'm sticking with Alexa, I like my direct access to order things from Amazon. Google will have to add that, if it doesn't already have Amazon ordering already built in.

Google will be a superior assistant and will have a lot of fancy features, but Alexa will be there with the essential features for one of these devices. Phones will still be the workhorses around the house. My Echo and Echo Dot haven't really replaced the phone very often. More of a good device when you are in the kitchen and you can't use your hands.

One day I can see that being feasible.

Didn't know that it was limited. I just happened to see the setting one day.

You can also switch it to echo. Three options.

Home has ok Google and hey Google. Only two options for now.

I agree, you should be able to record something that you personally say. And the voice. I want a different voice to respond.

For me, instead of saying, "OK, Google" I'd want it to respond to me in a sexy (female) British voice when I say, "Natalie?" It responds, "Hello, Master HB." Then I might say, "Natalie, let's be naughty and have some fun, shall we?" She responds, "Mmmmmm. I can't wait! What can I do for you?"

Hey, I mean, if we're talking customization, why not?

Nice link, thanks.

Google probably has "OK Google" to avoid having to deal with the millions of n00bs who will set a wake phrase that is both easy to accidentally trigger *and* so they can copyright it. They want to advertise "OK Google" and therefore have to copyright their choice so a competitor won't.

I'm leaning to "Dora" ... a probably very obscure Heinlein reference, in his later books he had a computer with that name that one could converse with.

Not for nothing, but do any of you have qualms about having a hot mic in your house connected to the internet 24/7? I'm not a tin-foil-hat person, but that sounds like a really bad idea.

Google already reads all of your email and makes marketing decisions (and who knows what else) based on that, so imagine if they can listen to everything your family says...

No. I have zero issue with it.

They don't gather data when the hot word is not used. It collects locally and is periodically dumped. Even if they're lying about that i still don't care. We're not criminals so we don't have anything to worry about.

Yeah I'm not a fan of this. Would suck if I was running for president one day and a few bad words about pussy recorded from my echo prevented me from getting elected. I'll stick to hard buttons.

Amazon sometimes shows me stuff I know I have talked about near my echo and echo dot that I have not searched for on the internet. Like me and the wife will be talking about needing something at the store and it will pop up on my amazon homepage. It's scary as hell. I kinda like it though.

Dot+BT Speakers in the home make the argument about sound quality/speaker superiority totally jaded and seemingly agenda-driven. Dot is over 60% cheaper, and can easily pair with a BT enabled speaker in your home.

No one is buying an Echo, Dot, or Home for sound quality. They already have speaker options in their home, whether it's whole home audio, installed theater speakers or just a BT Sound Bar or BT Speaker.

I don't disagree that Google may be superior in terms of contextual conversations, both right now and even more so in the future. But free sourcing Alexa and then featuring products that utilize it on the dominant retail website in the world is powerful as well.

I purchased the Echo Dot expressly because they work with the Blink Home Monitor. I can arm, disarm, confirm the system status and ask how many clips have been made or triggers of the system have been recorded using Alexa.

The integration of both and the fact I could buy Blink on Prime and extend my warranty for it through Amazon AND get it by Thursday made it more than a compelling value. It made me buy both products.

I just don't see Google being able to compete on that front. I see Google competing on sheer ability to provide more realistic, relevant, and accurate responses. But Alexa has a massive, multiple year head start. I don't discount Google, it's size or expertise in this area, but being first and having a dominant market position and petaflops worth of data on searches, questions, requests and processes already that Amazon enjoys is not to be discounted either.
