I've been keeping my eye on different dash cams and came across one that peaks my interest. The only thing I don't like about it is that the GPS sensor is a separate module. Does anyone use a dash cam? LINK

I have one of the cheap Chinese $60 versions. No GPS on mine. I've caught one accident that happened right in front of me on it.

I wonder how important the GPS would be. Does your video have a time stamp on it? If so, how does the unit get the time? I feel like if it's a user generated time setting, then it might be challenged in court. I'm referring to non-accident type violations.

Yes, it has a time stamp but i would imagine you can use the data from the file write to show an accurate time

This Street Guardian has been getting good reviews. I was just looking at it tonight.

A good place to do some research is on DashCamTalk. LINK

I've been looking as well. I was interested in the A118. Just need to pull the trigger.

I'm not sure GPS or speed indicators are permissible in court, so not sure what your interest is in that.

Why wouldn't they be permissible in court?

I have no idea. The video is, but not some of that data.

This isn't confirmed, but I read it in the last dashcam thread that popped up. I think the premise there was it couldn't be used as proof you were not speeding.

I don't really care if it's permissible in court for speeding. My Valentine 1 typically pics up a cop a good distance away. I just like to collect as much data as I can. Someone may allegedly want to use it for top speed runs. It also has a better lens than the A118.

Speed indicator is based on GPS reads and is not accurate enough.

I don't know that GPS reads are not admissible in court; it probably depends on what you are using them for. You'd probably be good if you were trying to show that you were in a certain city and screwed if you were trying to show that you didn't cross the double yellow line.

If the GPS based recording showed that you were going 70, and showed a car passing you quickly, and a quarter of a mile later you get a ticket for going 85, it might produce enough doubt that the cop stopped the wrong car.

I think it also may help in determining fault if someone pulls out in front of you and claims that if you weren't speeding they would have had enough time.

I used to use one until it died. I need to get a better one. I drive a lot for work and people are crazy drivers. I caught a couple accidents on it. Luckily none of them were mine.

This is the one I had. Picture was great. Shitty overall product. Stopped working after 6 months. Other people had good luck with, but not me.

I'm currently using this action cam as a dashcam. It has a "Car Mode" that powers it on and starts recording when the car is turned on. No complaints so far. I'll have to see how it holds up in the heat though.

The only person I've ever met with one is a guy that smokes a ridiculous amount of dope and believes in every conspiracy imagined
