DirecTV Now changing name to AT&T TV Now

“As we roll out this new experience later this summer, current DirecTV Now customers will also see a new name — AT&T TV Now — appear on their screen,” the company said in announcing the change. DirecTV Now subscribers will have to re-accept terms of service, logging in using the same username and password.

AT&T hasn’t divulged pricing or packaging details for the new AT&T TV service, which will use a “thin client” internet set-top box. On the company’s Q2 earnings call on July 24, CEO Randall Stephenson said AT&T TV will slash customer-acquisition costs by 50% compared with the legacy DirecTV satellite service.

“The DirecTV [satellite] product is going to have a really long life,” he said. But the new AT&T TV service will deliver lower retail price points “and still have the same value equation from a customer standpoint.”

AT&T is revamping the OTT pay-TV portfolio as it preps for the launch of another new streaming service: HBO Max, a direct-to-consumer subscription video package that will include content from HBO and Warner Bros., reruns like “Friends” and “Pretty Little Liars,” original films and service — and, eventually, live news and sports, according to Stephenson. HBO Max is slated to debut commercially in spring 2020; AT&T has scheduled an investor briefing on HBO Max for Oct. 29.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

DTVN drove me back to attach the cord.

Aug 1st I'll be canceling my DTV and going with a streaming service. Not that my actual product was bad but that customer service was awful. Spent over 20 hours trying to resolve an issue that was never resolved but that wasn't even the reason. The reason I'm canceling is for the Ahole who hung up on me after being on the line for 4 hours being passed around from one department to another and he didn't like me telling him that I've tried what he's suggesting with the 7 other people before him. Because of that guy, don't even know his name, I'm leaving DTV.

I'm looking into dropping DTVN for Hulu or YouTube TV. They are in contract disputes, and I haven't had CBS or Fox for about a month now. I'm going to wait until football season, and if it's still not there I'm dropping them.

i honestly don't know why anyone would have DTVN. Hulu and YouTube TV are far superior. Unless you are getting some crazy good at&t bundle pricing/grandfather deal.

I've gone back on the cord, albeit its a fibre one now, because it's actually saving me money and providing more...Why bother with torrents any more if everything is just as available on demand

I have it because my wife likes HBO and my kids like Nick Jr. I'm not a fan of DTVN but they had the best price for what we all wanted.

DTVNow raised my plan to $10 and I'm still getting a lot more for less or equal to the competitors. I'm not a fan but if I switch I'll be paying the same amount and losing channels we watch (including Hallmark, which would immediately get nixed by the wife)

I'm in the same boat. They better get the shite with CBS figured out

YouTube TV
I have mostly Google everything but no commercial skipping on the DVR, since it's basically OnDemand, was a no go for me.

Oh yeah, that's exactly what everyone wants, to go back to a cable-style STB that makes it harder to switch to a different service. I guess they're going to charge a monthly rental per box, too?

I have YTTV and skip every commercial that comes up on my DVR shows...but go with Hulu, where you only get like 30 hours of DVR and can watch on only 2 devices at one time

I don't have Hulu.
Hmm my free trial with YouTube didn't work that way at all. Psvue works better. Surprised me as I got just about Google/Android everything.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think YTTV unlocks fast forwarding ads for certain channels after so many days...but I can say I've never run into that problem

Just dropped DTV for Hulu Live.
Saving me around $100 per month.
Hulu offers live locals (minus ABC) and comes with 40hr of DVR. It’s taken some getting used to and doesn’t have every single channel that I was getting from DTV but it’s still worth making the move IMO to save that kind of money.

It is actually very desirable. People want normal DVR capabilities and a dedicated remote that works perfectly.
There is too much compromise with streaming services, especially when it comes to hardware functionality.

I'd love to cut DTV and go Internet TV, but my internet speeds are shite where I live so I am stuck.

There's a whole generation of YouTube/Netflix kids coming up who don't even know the purpose of a DVR. Some don't even see the point of a dedicated remote control, much less one that's specific to a particular video service.

That vendor lock-in compromise is one that fewer and fewer people are willing to make. Almost everyone on this board has tried multiple streaming services... how many of those people would consider switching to one that requires a different STB and remote? It just sounds silly to me.
