Hello all. I’ve got a 77 CX OLED and a great surround sound system. Would physical blue rays through my PS5 be better visually and through audio than streaming the same movie through an app?

Is it worth getting a blue ray player? Is it really worth buying physical copies?

pros / cons both ways but personally I converted all a/v media to digital a few years ago and have everything on a home media server.

absolutely, especially the audio.

That is a you question. You should try a disc in your PS5 first and see if you notice the difference. a disc player would also get you improved Dolby Vision if you like what you see from the PS5.

First, to nitpick, "physical media" stores data digitally as well, so the only real difference from streaming is the rate the data can be transferred. And the difference is quite large, in the range of 5-10X more data. Now, compression algorithms are really good (even the bluray data is compressed), so as the bitrates increase the returns diminish, so it's not like the bluray will look 5X better (in case that's not obvious). But the short answer is yes, the bluray will be better in both audio and video.

As already said, that's up to you. You will just have to compare and see if the difference is worth it to you.

Yes.

The better BluRay players will outperform the PS5.

If you want the absolute best quality possible then yes.

What is REMUX?

- A remux is a rip of a Blu-ray or UHD DVD disc to another container format (MKV) or just stripping the disc of menus and bonus material while keeping the contents of its audio and video streams intact (also keeping the current codecs), guaranteeing the exact 1:1 movie quality as on original disc.

A remux is not as good as a disc if you are going to play Dolby Vision content. There are no media players that can play profile 7 Dolby Vision with FEL content accurately without some modifications. Remux can be as good as disc for HDR10 and HDR10+, though.

Is this true? I know the PS4s and Xbox Ones had some HDR issues (although the XboneX could do Atmos), but I thought the 5s were supposed to have full HDR range and Atmos.

I’ve found modern a/v to be an exercise in futility that isn’t worth the investment. Even after you wrangle all the necessary hardware, the physical media fights you with what it supports. Oppenheimer will offer UHD but no atmos support. Another movie will offer DTS but no HDR, etc.

If you are talking about HDR10 disc content, the PS5 is as good as any other player. The only issues the super picky folks have found with the PS5 is having to use a game controller and/or they dont like the noise as the PS5's fan is a bit louder.
