Difference in OLED, LCD, LED, Plasma, etc.?

Depends on what you want to spend

Samsungs QLED if you want the latest and greatest.

No matter what you buy, be sure to spend the money on a TV with local dimming if you go with something other than OLED. Most edge lit panels suck arse and have lots of backlight bleed.

I don't think so. Don't get me wrong the QLEDs are nice but the Sony A1E blows them away. The Sony Z looks better too IMO.



OP really depends on how you use the TV. If money is no issue it would be between the Sony A1E and the Z. If you have a dark room and watch a lot of movies I'd buy the A1E. If your room has a lot of light or you watch a lot of sports I'd buy the Z.



However if you just want something that is really cool and looks awesome I'd buy a Samsung Frame. It's cheaper too. They are pretty hush on the technology in these but they do come with the 14 inch connect box just like the QLED and on the back of the panel where the mount connects there is a Q8 sticker. The picture looks great but not OLED or Sony Z great.

OLED if you watch TV and movies a lot in the dark.

QLED if you mostly watch in a bright room.

Still pissed that the consumer allowed plasma to die. I just moved on from my Panny ST60. I wanted 4k in my two main rooms, so had to move on. The wife didn't want the Panny in the bedroom, so I sold it. Ended up getting a native Sony 4k projector for the theater and an OLED for living room.

In my opnion, OLED is the best PQ quality available among the current offerings and closest thing to plasma.

Should have said blame them for allowing it to die years before it should have. They are absolutely to blame in this case. They bought into the over hyped negatives of plasma panels and flocked to a shittier product. Plasma panels from the mid 2000's have better PQ that many 2017 LCD/LED. I am not being exaggerating, I have a Panny plasma I paid 5k for in 2004 that has better PQ with DirecTV HD channels than new mid tier LEDs panels.

I don't see it as a similar situation as CRT. By the time CRT's got phased out, there was tons of HD channels to actually get content to make sense. I get that plasma panels were far from being able to do 4k, but the amount of 4k content is still limited in comparison to 720/1080 HDTV.

IMO, consumers bought into the overstated negatives of plasma and positives of LCD and was reinforced when they would go into Best Buy or their box store of choice and the display TVs were showing special content on settings that only work in store to give a false impression of the PQ.

I do agree that eventually plasma would have died as 4k starts to become the norm, but that is still years away. I really would have loved to see what plasma panels could have done with 4k content with the proper R&D in it.

Funny because Sony is using panels made by LG. May even be the same panels LG uses in their own TVs
