And the obligatory, no we're not watching Mexican goat pron.

My bride has found some dude on the net with all kinds of jail breaking vids and he's recommending it for streamers.

Thoughts?

Interesting assumption that “cord cutters” is code for “thiefs”

Generally it is because of shared logins. I for one pay for all of my own

We are going to go with Hulu as our main service. Why in the heck would I associate "cord cutters" with "theives" if I'm paying for the service?

If you're using Netflix, Hulu, etc, then no -- you do not need a "VPN type thingy"

If you are using a paid for subscription like Hulu, Netflix etc.... then you don't need a VPN.

If you are using a free streaming service such as a Kodi addon, or Showbox then you still don't need a VPN.

If you are downloading torrents on plex or showbox then yes you need a VPN.

using a VPN using a legit streaming service might have some negative effects.

I know Fox usually wants to know where you are before they let you watch their sports station, so if you are at home, they know where you are and give you the local fox sports, but if you are through a VPN that's in New Jersey, that channel might be blacked out b/c your bill says your in Baton Rouge, but your internet is telling Fox your in New Jersey.

Regardless of what i just said, the answer is no, you don't need a VPN unless you are downloading torrents, or using Kodi/terrarium or some IPtv service.

Thanks for the info guys.

We use Kodi some but probably only about 20% of the time, watching old movies and such.

Only if you get some major buffering. ISP's like to throttle data.

I eager to access geolocked content as well as I am looking for privacy. I do not have experience with VPNs.

Can anyone suggest a VPN and explain how I would set this up with the firesstick or on the modem?? From the research I have done, I found some decent info about Firestick VPN providers, but real world experience is welcome

CHeck out windscribe. Works great for me on the firestick.

You can even try it out for free using 10 GB a month.

Easy setup on firestick. Download the app log in and 1 button to connect/disconnect. Very user friendly.
