Switching from Mac to PC for work related computer and curious about the current best practices for keeping computer secure. Is Windows Security good enough or do I need to get something like Avast or another virus protection? I use PIA as VPN as well.

Yes. Common sense is the best security for PCs.
There's also a certain extension that you should have installed to help keep away unwanted things

I use ESET.
Check with you IT department, if the company has one. In the event your company uses a particular brand and you’ll be accessing their network, it may be to your advantage to use the same one. It’s even possible they may offer a discounted license for you.
If you’re independent, Windows security is probably good enough but there are definitely better solutions out there, even better free AVs

Nah in chrome and firefox.

An extension for internet browsing helps, as well as making adjustments to the options and permissions in the browser. You can also run Malwarebytes or SUPERAntiSpyware periodically.
I haven't run anything other than Windows Security Essentials on any of my personal computers for like 10yrs, and have only had one of two problems.
Eta: Don't let other people use your shite, and always do custom installs of programs that you download from reputable sites

This is a big one. Never do the "express" or "recommended" install. Sometimes the installer will sneak in a PuP

I probably haven't been the best at doing custom install. It's just Slack, Zoom, and a couple other non Microsoft for desktop apps.
I'm good about scouting and not clicking on malware and junk (and have the Windows Guard installed on chrome now). I just don't want someone hacking into my business on a shared network since everything my team and I do is cloud-based and we are in a shared office/coworking environment.

There is a free version of Bitdefender? Jump on that.

It’s just the AV, but yeah, if that’s all you need and want.

I use Kaspersky and have been for over 4 years. Nothing slips by it. Easy on system resources as well.
Sophos is another that I would recommend in case you are scared of using a Russian based product.
