Glad it's not just me.

TL;DR
Google Chromecast (2nd Gen) and Chromecast Audio users are facing issues due to an authentication error.
Users have tried multiple troubleshooting steps, but nothing works, while newer Chromecast models remain unaffected.
Update: Google has acknowledged the issue and is advising users not to factory reset their devices. If you have already factory reset your device, please wait for further instructions on how to bring it back to a functional state.

Yep, thank goodness for Reddit and TD. I screwed around with mine for an hour until I found info online about the outage. SSL cert expired.

Just got this email:
We’re contacting you because of a disruption affecting Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. We apologize for the issue and understand your frustration. We are working to roll out a fix as soon as possible and will share updates and guidance on the Nest Community page. We appreciate your patience as we resolve this issue.

I know this is a weird thread to post this sentiment, but Chromecast is so much better than anything else it's supposed to be competing with. 99% of the time, you plug it in and IT JUST frickING WORKS.

When I heard they were possibly discontinuing them, I bought like 10 off the Play Store. I keep one each at the relatives' homes I most visit, one in my suitcase and have them on every TV in the house. I even forced my work to use them on the common flat panels so visitors can very easily cast presentations and the like.

Apple TV is a baffling ordeal compared to Chromecast.

I think that in my panic to get it working, I performed a factory reset which is looking like a really bad idea. At least I have Bluetooth which seems to stay connected for a good distance.

These are no longer available I see. Is there a comparable alternative?

I wish I had one of these for the deer camp or when traveling. I procrastinated too long, though.

There's usually some on eBay. WiiM makes a product line that might work for you.

I prefer the Apple TV over any other streaming box, but I own a lot of Apple Mac things and it all just works. Never had the slightest issue with anything.

I don't personally own any Apple products, but I've watched those that do fool around with Apple TVs on multiple occasions. It's always some bullshite.

Walmart sells the best budget Google streamer now. The Onn. 4k Pro.
